The stars on the confederate flag represent the original 13 states that belonged to the Confederate States of America. The first confederate flag had only 7 stars which represented the 7 southern states that were in the confederacy.

When Braxton Bragg was able to set-up a Confederate government in Kentucky, the regimental tailors were ordered to sew a twelfth star into the Stars and Bars, but that government collapsed as soon as Bragg retreated.

Before thinking about value, the first thing you have to do is make sure that the bill is authentic. Right now, the fact that it has a serial number the same as the date makes me suspicious, I can't say that it is a fake based on the serial number (I can't find any information that the serial number 1862 is a known fraud) but you have to be aware that there is more fake Confederate currency circulating than real. If genuine it could be worth $100 or so depending on condition. But the number one thing you have to do is get it authenticated. I would check online and make sure that your note matches up with the period technology (for example, not signed in black ink) and make sure that it doesn't say "facsimile" or "COPY" anywhere on the bill itself. If all those things match up, I would take it to a reputable dealer in paper currency and see what they think and they might be able to give you an estimate of price. If they think it is real and you don't want to sell it right then, I would pay the fee and send it into a currency grading company to have it slabbed, authenticated and graded. This will make it much easier to sell or have it insured.

Captain Henry Wirz was the Swiss commander of the Confederate prison at Andersonville. After a show trial, he was found guilty of war crimes and hanged in front of a huge crowd.

Modern replicas of Confederate money (in fact, of all money) by law must have the word COPY or REPLICA worked into the design.

However, millions and millions of copies of genuine Confederate money were made for sale in gift shops and as memorabilia for many decades before that law went into effect. A lot of them were made by photolithography using artificially aged paper and can be very difficult for the average person to identify. Fortunately, many of the replicas were taken from a small set of genuine bills so it's often possible to cross-reference the serial numbers and/or signatures against lists of known copies.

The first state to secede from the Union was South Carolina. It seceded December 20, 1860, and would be among the first seven states that formed the Confederate States of America in February 1861.

It would probably be worth a few dollars to a collector who cannot get one of the 4 genuine Confederate half dollars which are valued in the hundreds of thousands, the 500 official "restrikes" made on previously struck US half dollars valued in the 5-10,000 range, or the 500 "Scott Tokens" which used the original Confederate reverse die valued up to $3000 or so.

Along the U.S.A.-C.S.A. border, the states clearly on the Union side were Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Kansas, the states clearly on the Confederate side were Virginia, Tennessee and Arkansas, and "on the fence" were Kentucky and Missouri.

The states along the border between the U.S. and the U.K.'s North American territories were Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Minnesota.

The only U.S. state bordering México was California, and the only C.S.A. state bordering México was Texas.

The first state to secede was South Carolina on December 20, 1860. It was followed by six other southern slaves states including Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. After the capture of Fort Sumter, in the Charleston, South Carolina, US President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to join the army for three months in order to put down the Southern rebellion. Then, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas and North Carolina seceded.

This totaled eleven states in all. The new "Confederate States of America" was hoping to increase the chances of its war for independence if the Union border states of Missouri, Kentucky and Maryland would join the South. They never did and this caused increase tensions in these states as the slavery issue was complicated.

First you need to know whether it's genuine. Ever since the 1920s firms have been making replica bills for use in advertising and as novelty items sold to Civil War buffs. Most of them were photoprinted from real currency on artificially aged paper and are very difficult to distinguish from the real thing. They were not intended as counterfeits but over the years a lot of them have been separated from the original displays and made it onto the market as "genuine" Confederate money. Replicas printed since the 1970s are required to have the word COPY in small letters as a way of limiting this problem, but anything printed earlier almost certainly isn't identified as a copy.

Richmond played a larger role during the US Civil War than any other Confederate city. It was not only the Confederate capital but also the capital of Virginia. It also became a hospital center as so many battles were fought in Virginia. It also became a prisoner of war location and very importantly, the Union made countless attempts to capture it.
