How many kernels of corn are on a cob?
That depends upon a number of things. Any given variety of corn will produce a characteristic number of kernel rows, as counted in the middle of the ear (fewer rows at the end, where the ear tapers). Poor growing conditions, or poor rates of pollination will result in fewer rows, and fewer kernels overall. But, in general, given fair growing conditions and good pollination rates, most varieties will produce either 8, 10, 12, or 14 rows of kernels in the middle of the ear. 8 rows is typical for many earlier, open-pollinated varieties. 12 or 14 rows is more typical for the latest hybrid varieties. All the above is for sweet corn. I think the same general rules apply to feed corn, both flint and dent types. I know of no corn that produces an odd number of rows, unless it be an occasional freak ear. I did a little research after asking this question, so I thought I would post an update. As the previous poster was kind enough to inform us, the number of rows does vary. But in my research, I never found any evidence that it could be as low as 8 or 10 (nor have I ever seen an ear of corn with so few rows). Also, the number of rows is (for the most part*) dependent only upon the specific variety of corn. From what I can tell, 16 is probably the most common number of rows. 14 and 18 are also seen often. Confirming what the previous poster said about odd numbers, corn ears ALWAYS have an even number of rows, because the rows always occur in pairs. * Note, poor pollination will not affect the number of rows, though it will certainly affect the number of kernels. Also, "poor growing conditions" generally won't affect the number of rows. It has to be an EXTREME event, entailing severe physical or chemical damage to the plant, in an early stage of vegetative development. Lack of moisture isn't enough, at any time of the growing season. And nothing can affect the number of rows once the plant reaches the reproductive stages of development.
Is corn meal same as maize flour?

Why is corn a natural resource?
This really depends on how the corn is grown.
In the old days, corn was fertilized with natural fertilizers, the fields were plowed with power from horses, weeding was done by hand, and the harvest was done by hand. That is renewable.
The plow for most fields of corn today is powered by petrochemicals, the fertilizer often comes from chemical factories and was produced with petrochemicals, the harvest is powered by petrochemicals. That is not renewable.

I believe corn is a starch.
Corn kernels contain sugar (sacharides) and starch (poly-saccharide). The stalk (stover) is lignin (poly-phenol) and cellulose (also a poly-saccharide).
maize plant has wide leaves to increase its rate of photosynthesis so as to make more sugar as it can only last through the summer.

How many seeds of corn in 1 kg?
Corn (maize) can have widely varying seed counts per pound depending on the kind of corn (dent, flint, sweet, etc.) and whether the seed has been sized for mechanical planting. An approximate average across all types and sizes would be about 1,800 seeds per pound, but it can vary from as few as 1,200 per pound to over 3,500 per pound.
Standard types of sweet corn, either sugary (su) or sugar enhanced (se), have about 2,000 to 3,000 seeds per pound. Supersweet corn (sh2), generally ranges between 3,000 to 5,000 seeds per pound. Growers typically plant about 24,000 seeds per acre. Most professional seed companies offer corn seed by its seed count, not by weight. This allows the grower to more precisely purchase his or her needs.
In corn canned in a home kitchen, water is added to the corn and approximately 1 teaspoon of salt is added to each pint of corn. In commercially prepared corn, you can find sulfites (will probably be listed under other names), salt (sodium), and possibly a chemical called BPA.

What is the BTU value of corn?
For our discussion, the two most important factors affecting corn's BTUs is moisture content and test weight. Moisture content subtracts directly from the overall weight of the corn. For example, if you have a pound of corn at 13% moisture, subtract .13 from the pound, which therefore equals .87 pounds of zero percent moisture corn. 13% of a 40-pound bag gives the consumer 34.8 pounds of zero percent moisture corn. Therefore it is evident that moisture is a key component in the amount of BTU's corn delivers. The other variable as we have stated above is test weight. Test weight is the measure of the quality and the number of BTU's per pound. Seed corn, cultivation, and weather determine the test weight per bushel. Higher test weights yield a larger BTU per pound. Typically test weight can range from 50 to 58 pounds per bushel, which corresponds to 7600 to 8500 BTU's per pound of zero percent moisture corn. When taking into consideration moisture and test weight we can fairly estimate the BTU's per pound and bag. The average test weight this year was 57.1 pounds per bushel, which equates to approx. 8,410 BTU's per pound at zero percent moisture. At 13% you have .87 pounds of zero percent moisture corn, which equals 7,316 BTU's per pound, because of the moisture content there is a loss of 1,094 BTU's per pound. Therefore, the total energy per bag would be, 40 pounds at 13% moisture times 7,316 or 292,640 BTU's per bag. When comparing with LP, 3 gallons of LP equals 274,500 BTU's. The average cost of LP has been 1.80 per gallon or 5.40 for three gallons. Therefore a 40-pound bag of corn will yield 18,140 more BTU's than 3 gallons of LP. The exact number of BTUs per pound of corn must take in efficiency of your stove, furnace or boiler.

What is corn dolly made out of?
Well, I can make a yarn dolly. They should be pretty similar. First, you take a long stalk of corn, and wind it around a piece of cardboard an inch in width as many times as it will allow. Remove the cardboard. Next, tie another piece of straw in the place you want the neck to be and one about a centimeter from the top of the head. Cut the fold of straw at the top and bottom of the dolly. Take 3 strands of straw below the neck. Make a tight braid for each. It should now look like a doll with a head, two arms, and a ghost-like body. Tie a piece of straw where you want the legs to begin. Braid all remaining straw into two legs below the new tie. Tada! You should now have a straw dolly!
