I would look at several things. I would start by checking for vacuum leaks, such as intake gaskets, injector seals, vacuum hoses, etc. I would then check compression across all cylinders to make sure they are within @ 5-8 psi of each other. More than 10 psi difference could cause the engine to lag. The greater the loss of vacuum or compression, the more exaggerated loss of power gets. I would also check the ignition timing. It dont have to be off much for lack of performance. Good luck!

At the dealers during the 80's we often saw this intermittent problem in the service department. The most common cause was the TPS (throttle position sensor). An easy and accurate way for anybody to verify that it is indeed the TPS is to crank the engine while observing the tachometer needle. If the "tach signal" is present then the tach needle will fluctuate slightly off of zero. This simple test proves that the car's ECM (electronic control module) is receiving the "go-ahead-and-start-the-engine " signal. Unfortunately, this signal is required to keep the engine running as well. If there is no tach signal the ECM cannot recognize that the engine is running so it turns off the ignition and fuel injection. If while the engine is stalled you witness the absence of the cranking tach signal you will need to replace the TPS sensor. Be carefull to follow the replacement procedure exactly because these old sensors are adjustable. Better yet have a reputable shop do it.

If you have lock outs or free spinning front hubs, you turn the center of each front hub to lock them in. If you don't have lock outs, they lock in when you put it in four wheel drive. To unlock them, take it out of four wheel and slowly back up 3 to 5 feet.

The repair depends on what is causing the low compression. Low compression can be caused by a blown head gasket, cracked cylinder head, burnt or damaged valves, worn or cracked piston rings, scored block cylinders. It's kind of hard to imagine that an engine would have low compression on all 6 cylinders unless something major is wrong, or the compression gauge is not measuring properly.

Blown fuse or the are turned off. Turn the headlight switch right or left and see if they come on.

Could very well be the spark plugs or possibly fuel injectors. I had the same problem and it was the spark plugs. check for dead spots in your tps. also check that the resistance in your airflow meter is consistant.

I'm somewhat confused by your use of the term "starter button". I assume you're referring to hooking up a remote starter allowing you to spin the engine while you're working under the hood. First make sure that the vehicle is in either park or neutral. Second, make sure that the ignition switch is in the "off" position. Locate the starter solenoid which is atop the starter assembly. Disconnect the trigger wire at it's spade terminal. The wire will most likely be yellow in color. Connect one end of your remote starter button at this terminal on the starter and the other end to the positive battery post.

Let engine reach operating temperature. Adjust idle too 800 rpm (manual trans)/ 700 rpm in "D" (automatic). 7 degrees BTDC/ 13 degrees advanced (non California). 10 degrees BDTC (California model)

Purchase a windshield and door trim removal kit from Harbor Freight for approximately $6 to $15.

Contact breaker point gap 0.45-0.55 mm

Distributor dwell angle .49-55 deg

Ignition timing at idle speed 7 deg btdc in neutral

temp sensor going bad will cause the engine to dump fuel and foul plugs very quickly.

If you mean that the vehicle will start but not idle after it's warmed up? and will die if allowed to idle.

No complete answer yet, but, I'm a tech with 44 years experience, and currently I'm working on a 1981 Datsun Pickup with the z22 engine, and ONE of the problems with this truck I'm working on is that it dies at idle after it's warmed up.


For this particular truck, and for things to look at with this problem, what I'm suspecting are one or more of the following:
1. choke set too lean (These engines run very lean to start with and as they age they get leaner.)
2. EGR valve stuck open. (Or other large vacuum leak.)
3. Idle circuit in the carb clogged up. (Carbs need to be cleaned/overhauled sometime after 150k miles, and I'm trying to avoid that overhaul in this truck since so many other things are pending or currently wrong.)
4. Idle shut off valve not opening. (This is called the Anti-Dieseling Solenoid, located right upper rear of carb body on this vehicle. It has one wire to it, which is hot when key is on, no voltage when key is off, which shuts off the idle circuit, preventing dieseling. and preventing idle if not working properly. and working fine on this truck.)
5. To meet emissions and so that they can run very lean, These engines use 8 spark plugs, two for each cyl, therefore the cap or rotor is prone to cause problems and cross firing. Best to use cap & rotor made in Japan to avoid this.
6. and since the vehicle has 2 coils, a complicated dist cap & rotor, it's often found to be wired incorrectly. However, the cap shows where each wire is supposed to go, printed right on the cap at each terminal. the only problem is the coils themselves are not marked intake or exhaust. But reversing the coils will not prevent the vehicle from running however, messing up the firing order will keep it from running.

Backfiring in a nutshell: A backfire is when the ignition of fuel doesn't take place in the ignition/combustion chamber, it(a backfire) can take place in the intake or exhaust. It can be caused by a fuel to air ratio not being correct, also if the timing of the spark is not just right that could cause it to back fire. It could be running lean with not enough fuel and too much air, or could have too much fuel and not enough air. It could be because the intake valves are not shut when the combustion takes place, therefore the combustion would take place in the wrong spot. The most likely cause are from: 1. Incorrect timing, the timing issue could be caused by bad wiring/ or bad ignition. 2. Incorrect fuel to air ratio, bad fuel filter, low fuel pressure-caused by weak fuel pump. Most cars will have the same cause for backfiring, as long as it's an internal combustion engine it shouldn't differ...
