More information that might be of interest regarding this issue: Laptops are not normally dependent on a special power-supply made by the manufacturer of that particular brand or make.
There are some HP laptops with a special connector with 3 wires. They do not accept a power-supply with only 2 wires, at least not without some modifications.
The absolute number one most important factor is the voltage it gives out. Too high a voltage can seriously damage your laptop beyond repair. A voltage that is too low on the other hand may allow you to run the computer but it might not charge the battery.
If the chosen power-supply has got too little "juice" in it (Ampere), then it will simply cut off power due to being overloaded. This should not harm the computer.
Such a power-supply can still in most cases run the laptop. Just let it charge the battery first. When battery is fully charged, then switch computer on.
A laptop charging the battery whilst being on can easily draw 90 watt, where as when it does not charge the battery it will only draw between 30 and 50 watt depending on model.

Also, on the Dell Latitude D500's, you can go up to a 2.1Intel Pentium M Dothan processor and 3 gb of RAM (I know, because that's what I was using for my School laptop). The cool thing about being able to use a codename: DOTHAN processor is that it has L2 2 Step 2m Cache so it runs SOOOO much faster than even today's Dual Core Processors. The only problem was the built in Video so I just moved up to a D800 which you can put in up to a 2.27 Ghz Intel Pentium M. Hope this helps!
P.s. Dell wanted to argue with me about my D500 had in it. I know what was in it because I installed it! When changing CPU's, make sure you use a good thermal paste, and you don't want to "GLOB" it on, you want just a think 1mm layer, if that!
