Democracy is indeed greek but i don't think that's what they were asking.

Democracy originated before the turn of the 5th century.

The most important barriers to the US being a democracy is the fact that We the People rarely vote for small things, and the fact that we don't vote at all. In a democracy, every decision the government makes will be voted on, and the peoples' votes will be added up and a decision will be made. Here in the US, we have offical morons who vote for us, and their votes are not effected by what We the People vote for. At least it seems like it....

Representative. We vote for people to represent us.

I would argue that direct democracy is not successful at all. In a true democracy every legal citizen would have an equal say in EVERY decision made. What we have here in the United States is not a true democracy. We have a mix of direct democracy and elected representatives. Some drawbacks to a complete democracy would include; decisions take alot of time and in times of war we need quick action, my ten year old brother would have just as much say in the functionings of our government as a US senator, and it would be a tyrannic rule by the majority-51% of the population could force the other 49% to do whatever they please.

Democracy is a system where decisions taken by the system are voted on by individual members of the system or their elected representatives.

The "social" side of social democracy refers to the provision of universally-provided social welfare services, where the government runs social programs such as government administered pensions, Health care, unemployment insurance, welfare or other social safety net programs.

Social Democracy is a system that combines both government regulation and some public ownership of areas of the economy that can be small, vast or somewhere between. This is a decision for the democracy side of social democracy.

Indonesia has a number of oligarchic and dictatorial elements, which is why it is typically considered an Illiberal Democracy (as opposed to Liberal Democracies like the United States, France, Germany, et al.). That is to say that while there are certain trappings of democracy, they are not sufficient to create a truly democratic atmosphere. Several things that Indonesia has which make it a democracy include: regular voting periods, different candidates, and different parties with conflicting interests. Several things that Indonesia has, which preclude it from being a Liberal Democracy include: suppression of some forms political expression, high levels of corruption, restrictions on the freedom of speech and in the press, issues for religious and ethnic minorities - especially concerning Javanese expansionism, and the strong and concentrated authority vested in the executive.

1-In a population of 1000000, 4 candidates vie to be the leader and a fair election is conducted. 1st candidate got 40% vote, the 2nd got 30%, the 3rd gets 25% and the 4th gets 4% and 1% vote, spoil. The 1st candidate is declared the winner but technically, 60% are against his policy and system! So, do we expect peace and stability where 60% decries the leader, his policy and system? Has the world seen stability and peace in all democratically-elected Government?

2-Democracy leaves far too much room for corruption. The system itself becomes so vast and so large, it can do nothing but keep growing or go into a 50 year depression, but no elected leader would ever accept a depression of that magnitude. The sheer enourmous size of most democracies are set up that way to allow for corruption to go unnoticed to the layman.

3-Money controls everything in an elected democracy. Those with the most money will see whomever they want to see elected, which is ususally contradictory to the opinions of the majority, to their detriment.

Strengths 1-Robust economy 2-More social services from the government, helping the poor out in ways NO other government can. 3-Military powerhouse. As a democracy, poor people flock to your banner like moths to a flame. 4-Happier population if the people think they have a say so, that their voice can be heard (which it most certainly can). 5-More individual rights and liberties than any other form of government.
