Can an employer discriminate against a health safety representative?

In the US there are still some grounds on which an employer is permitted to discriminate. Among them is "not doing a good job" and "misuse of company resources." Being a health and safety representative does not insulate you from the consequences of poor performance, etc.

However, an employer is not permitted to discriminate against any employee for raising reasonable concerns about health and safety in the workplace, and a health and safety representative would be expected to do that, perhaps more than other employees.

When did discrimination against women start?

Why are people prejudice towards the poor?

Opinion

Because most people are raised to feel superior to someone else in some way, shape, or form. That way, they can feel better about their status in life and boost their own egos. Some choose to do so with race, while others may pick gender or age. And yet others choose to do so with wealth and class in society.

Opinion

There are many reasons:

Most people think they got where they are by their own efforts. They don't realize that generally, successful, mainstream people got where they are with someone's help, usually their parents. Often they benefitted, without realizing it, from their government, their culture, their social status, family backgrounds, healthy and stable living conditions, support from extended family, support in school, etc. It is a special type of arrogance and self imposed ignorance.

To be fair, some people are prejudice toward the poor because sometimes it seems they are, in some cases, unwilling to help themselves when help is available. Rising up from your impoverished background takes help and support from others and a willingness to work very hard yourself.

Another reason is the uprise in selfishness, self-centeredness and general meanness towards everyone else including anyone in need. It's easier to think needy people are all just lazy rather than seek out and acknowledge the real needs and address them. The truth is, either we deal with it now or we deal with it later and later is much more expensive.

What are examples of prejudice and discrimination in the present day?

Today, there are still examples of prejudice and discrimination all around. There are racists, sexists, and many religion prejudices in the world. Also, there are still people who judge according to looks and heritage. A lot of prejudice has been removed but that doesn't mean it is gone completely. For instance, people tend to think women are the type that do the cooking, but do you see more male or female chefs? Males are normally chefs but people still stereotype women as the cooks.

Why do Mexicans hate Argentinians?

They don't. The problem is, Argentine people are part of a stereotype which states that they arrogantly believe of themselves as "sencillito, bonito y carismatico" (Spanish for: humble, handsome and charismatic).

Of course it is a misconception that all Argentinians fulfill this stereotype, but ignorance and old stereotypes are hard to overcome, as Mexicans themselves can testify (see related questions).

Why are black people weak?

Black people as a whole aren't weak, so your question of "why" is invalid.

There are many strong black people, both physically and mentally. And though there may be some weak minded or weak bodied black people because of various reasons, it doesn't engulf every other black person, and there is someone like that within every race of the human race.

Will the discrimination ever end?

No. Discrimination us usually a valuable process, it means identifying and acting on the real differences among people. Employers NEED to discriminate based on skill, experience, education and licenses. Suitors discriminate based on looks, personality, and earning capacity. Voters discriminate pased on candidates' speeches, record, apparent personality, age, and party.

Some few bases for discrimination have been forbidden in narrow cases, but almost all discrimination remains lawful and useful.

This is about providing for everyone's needs when planning care, such as wheelchair access, meals for vegetarians, information in other languages etc.

Provide information eg your policies and procedures on equality and rights. Model good practice eg be seen providing for individual needs that ensure equal access.

Record and report it immediately - it is more likely to be addressed if it has been written down. Challenge discriminatory remarks with explanations of why they are wrong - back this up with your policies and procedures on equality and rights. Be proactive eg if you see that information is not accessible to all provide what is needed such as in other languages or Braille or in another form for those who cannot read.

Why does gender discrimination persists in modern world?

Because men and women are different in conduct and preferences in so many ways. Social institutions know that, and some try to work around it in ways that do not disadvantage women UNREASONABLY.

That is why almost no US employer pays women less than men for the same occupations, but acknowledges that women choose different occupatins than men, usually occupations paying less.
