User Avatar

Asked by Kooikeria

American Pit Bull Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers are very similar in appearance, with the main difference being that Pit Bulls are usually considerably larger and have longer legs. The English Bull Terrier is easily distinguishable from both Pit Bulls and Staffys as they have a uniquely shaped head which slopes steeply downwards from the base of the ears. English Bull Terriers are also generally bigger than Staffords but smaller than Pit Bulls. Pit Bulls, English Bull Terriers and Staffys are each recognized as individual breeds by the various existing Kennel Club organisations.

How can you tell a mini bull terrier from a standard bull terrier?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The mini rat terrier is smaller and weighs around 10-13 pounds and up to 13 inches tall. The regular rat terrier is bigger and weighs around 13 to 20 pounds and up to 20 inches tall. That's the difference between a mini rat terrier and a regular rat terrier. There is also a decker rat terrier that can weigh up to 50 lbs and are more aggressive.

As per RTCA (Rat Terrier Club of America ):

TOY, MINIATURE, STANDARD or GIANT?

There are officially no Toy or Giant varieties. The Standard by which our breed is judged by both the AKC and the UKC separates the varieties by height at the shoulder: "Over 13 inches", and "up to and including 13".... BTW: These same measurements are used in the Bull Terrier, Beagle and American Eskimo breeds for the separation of the varieties, and were also found to be the median height for our breed too. (10" to 19" are the acceptable and desired heights for our breed). THERE IS NO TOY VARIETY FOR RAT TERRIERS IN EITHER AKC OR UKC.

Rat Terriers are considered by weight to be a small to medium breed. Due to the many size variations found in the Rat Terrier, using height allows for the separation of the varieties, but includes most every size of our breed and therefore allows the opportunity for their development within a breeder's strain without individual's being disqualified. (Rat Terriers are officially part of the Terrier group, and not the Toy group. There are toys out there, but if you are looking for one of these smaller 3-7# toys, we suggest you check out the Toy Fox Terrier www.atftc.com. The TFT has been a recognized breed for over 60 years. Buyers Beware - so-called Toy (UKCI registered) RT's are not true purebreds and may have been hybridized by some breeders, having Chihuahua, Toy Fox Terrier and/or Manchester Terrier bloodlines added, of which, we do not condone the use of).

Are Bull terriers a dangerous breed of dog?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They ain't dangerous.. It's the person that raises it that makes it dangerous, with the right owner, it's the perfect cuddle pig ;D

Staffordshire Bullterriers were bred for dog-fighting, therefore they would have the tendency to be aggressive to other dogs, but it all depends on how you raise them. Staffies are great with people and especially with kids. They actually have the nickname of 'nanny dogs' because they are so placid around children. This is most likely due to them having a very high pain tolerance therefore children cannot hurt them that easily. But even though Staffies are usually seen to not be good with other dogs, if you socialise them from a young age with other dogs and supervise them when they interact with other dogs they can get along perfectly with other dogs. Usually it is not the breed that is dangerous but the way they are raised.

How do you train a pitbull terrier puppy?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I would reccommend using either a clicker, or good praise (and don't forget the treats!) for any tricks you want to teach them. An easy way to teach them is as follows: For example, if you were teaching your Boston how to sit, you would show them how, by pushing their butt down, then say "Sit". Wait a few seconds and then give them praise, click, or give them a treat. Do not push their butt down, instead simply hold treat above nose and move back, so they will sit to get closer to treat.

I have a female Boston Terrier and she is very sweet, but untrainable, maybe this will help.

How to know when your bull terrier is in labor?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A bitch will look for dark/private places to nest, and at the onset of labour will be restless, panting and may engage in digging activity. If you have a garden, she may want to go out all the time to dig, and may drop a pup out there. If you can, stay with the digging, as it is thought to aid contractions.

Is a bull terrier bigger than a staffie?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Firstly, the Pit Bull is not actually a breed, but the term is used to refer to breeds such as the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and sometimes the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Assuming by ''Pit Bull'' you mean the American Pit Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier, the difference is that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a few inches shorter, weighs less and was first bred in England. ''Pit Bull'' type dogs are unfortunately illegal in many countries, such as the UK, with the exception of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier; which is still legal.

What was the Bull Terrier first bred for?

User Avatar

Asked by Kooikeria

The French Bulldog originated in 19th Century Nottingham, England, where Lace makers decided to make a smaller, miniature, lap version of the English Bulldog, that were referred to as "toy" bulldogs. In the 1860's when the Industrial Revolution drove the craftsmen to France they took their dogs with them. The toy bulldogs became popular in France and were given the name the, "French Bulldog". The breed eventually made its way back to England for dog shows. The Britts were not happy with the name "French" given to a dog that was originally from England, however the name "French Bulldog" stuck.

How much food should you give your bull terrier?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

well it depends on how heavy he/she is and how old he/she is. It also depends on the type of food you give it. On the side of the packet of my dogs food it has a chart to say how much it should be eating. because mine is only a puppy (weighs about 2 kilos) we give it 50 grams a day and split that into 3 meals.

But it is important that you don't give it more than it needs, even if he/she eats it really quickly- westies can get fat easily!

What caused your dogs skin to turn blood red?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The underlying cause would be increased blood flow; however, there are several reasons why this could have occurred.

One is trauma - a scrape, scratch or bruise to the skin or underlying muscle would cause the skin to turn red. This would be more visible if the overlying hair had also been removed.

Another is infection, which can be either bacterial or fungal in nature. There is usually a foul-smelling greasy exudate on the skin and it tends to itch like crazy.

Third would be an allergic reaction, which could be to anything from fleas to food to pollen.

Your veterinarian will be able to help sort out exactly what happened, as well as prescribe appropriate treatment. A wound would be treated with cleaning, fur trimming and giving it time to heal; an infection needs antibiotics of some sort and allergies need avoidance therapy.

Do the personalities change with age 10 year old Bull terrier?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A Dog's personality should not be affected by it's age, although Dog's often become calmer and tire easily as they get older. Your Dog's personality should stay the same, but your Dog will likely need to go for shorter walks and take longer naps.
