Ethics and Morality

Ethics is about what we should – and should not - do. It includes identification of basic principles, e.g. the prerogatives of property owners; and the application of those principles to actual situations, e.g. copyright protection of intellectual property over the Internet.

Should you keep spending money on space exploration when you can use money on poor people?

A government department that returns at least $7 to the economy for each $1 spent, is a terrific investment. In other words, you don't "fix the budget" by killing the cash cow. How many poor people would there be today if NASA hadn't made computers a home appliance? We've looked for the answers we need down here, for millennia. It seems obvious they aren't here. But they may be up there.

No, you should spend the money here on earth where it is needed. When you're dying of starvation you couldn't care less about astronauts exploring space to find out if there is life on Mars or wherever: you want life right now. To deny people access to life when it is possible to do so is murder by negligence at the very least.

Can you Give examples of good work ethic?

By being a selfstarter - Do not wait to be told to get started on your days work, when you get to your office or job site do not get caught up standing around with other employees once the work day begins. You supervisor does should never have to tell you to get on task.

By being pro-active - If you see something needs to be done or if you know something that needs be done. Do it, do not give your supervisor a chance to tell you that you need to handle a task no matter if it is directly your responsibility or implied. By an implied task I mean one that may not be directly stated in your job title. For example lets say that your trash can at your desk is full or close to being full. No matter if you wait to the end of the day to change the liner or even if it is the custodian's job to do it and they do it at night, go ahead and change the liner and dispose of it in an approved manner at an appropriate time.

By being steady and consistent- Work at a steady pace that allows you to be thorough, yet efficient. Make sure that at the end of the workday you are still being productive. Do not start the day working at a break neck pace only to get tired just after lunch and then start making careless mistakes. Pace yourself and you always be far more productive in the long run.

By being efficient- Make good use of your time. Do not leave your designated work area every-time you need realize you need something. Try to consolidate your tasks. For example you need to use the copier, go to the bathroom, and pull a file from the records room. Do it all in one trip and save yourself what could have been 3 trips away from you designated work area.

Is hunting inhumane?

The answer depends on your point of view; To someone who supports animal rights and believes that animals have as much right to live as humans do, yes, it is inhumane, especially if it is for game. Only a true vegetarian would think that hunting is inhumane. Compare conditions at; stock yards, steer farms, and, slaughter houses, to, living free and in the wild, with the chance or possibility of being harvested. A true hunter always strives to harvest an animal in the most efficient way possible. I have seen the most seasoned hunter come to tears because they weren't on the mark and the animal's suffering was more than what could have been. Does anyone cry at the slaughterhouse when the odd one has to be pulled from the transport trailer by chain and forklift because in transport it suffered a broken leg? Does anyone cry when the kill spike does not meet its mark and "this one twitched so much I had to spike him again"? If you eat meat, hunting is far from inhumane. The deer I ate this evening had a greater quality of life and probably lived longer than the hamburger I had for lunch.

What does Virtue ethics focus on?

According to Aristotle and most philosophers, the purpose of ethics is living well. Its central concept is the concept of the good. What is the point of theorizing about the good without becoming good?

In theory, there is a fundamental division about the subject matter of ethics. Some philosophers think it is about character, about what we should be, about becoming a morally good person. Other philosophers think it is about acts, about what we should do, about doing the right thing. (A third option is to combine these two different viewpoints.)

An ethics of moral character is also called a virtue ethics because it focuses on character traits. Positive character traits are virtues; negative character traits are vices. It takes the fundamental question of ethics to be: "What should I be?" In other words, "What kind of person should I be?"

By way of contrast, an ethics of moral action focuses on the rightness or wrongness of acts, behavioral decisions. It takes the fundamental question of ethics to be: "What should I do?" (Most people today seem to assume that ethics is about right and wrong acts and not about good and bad character.)

Therefore, a virtue ethics focuses on the ideal of developing a morally good character. Typically, those who advocate a virtue ethics take morally right actions to be what a morally good person would do in certain circumstances. In this way, they try to understand talk about right and wrong acts in terms of good and bad character. ----

How many people participate in pay it forward?

The idea of pay it forward appeals to some people, but it is an informal process; they do not sign up at the Pay It Forward Foundation to become card-carrying forward payers. It would still be possible (in theory) to do a phone survey to determine how many people accept this philosophy, but in practice, it's not going to happen. So this population is not going to be counted.

The phrasing of the question is confusing. It could be one of two different questions:

1) What things does Judaism consider to be sexual immorality?

  • Adultery - e.g. sex between a married individual and someone who is not the spouse of the married individuals
  • Sex with More Than Two Individuals - e.g. a menage-a-trois or an orgy

  • Niddah - e.g. having sex with a with a woman who is on her period.
  • Religious intermarriage - e.g. a marriage between a Jew and a Non-Jew (Note that marriage between Jews-by-birth and Jews-by-Conversion is permitted for all Jews except Cohens)
  • Incestuous relations - e.g. marriages/sex between family members.
  • Marriages with certain Canaanite Groups (even after conversion)
  • Mamzer - e.g. a person who is either born of adultery, incest, or has a mamzer as a parent.
  • Marriage with Eunuchs
  • Homosexuality and bisexuality (this is contested between Orthodox Judaism and Liberal Judaism)
  • Bestiality
  • Sex/Marriage with a person unable to give consent (such as a mentally handicapped person)

2) What is the proper punishment in Judaism for sexual immorality?
Most forms of sexual immorality in Judaism are subject to capital punishment. However, Judaism has such stringent requirements on the implementation of capital punishment, that excommunication or local banishment are far more common as punishments for sexual immorality. Quite acceptable. Although chasing it across several fields before bouncing it off your bumper might be considered excessive. People can make a living from it. At the Road Kill Cafe in Red Lodge Montana, just off I212, the sales pitch slogan is "From your grill to ours"
