Firstly, you have to take the Fireguard exam conducted by the FDNY. Upon a satisfactory score of 70% or better, you then must get a letter of recommendation from your employer.

Some companies give letters of recommendation for applicants upon completion of the fireguard exam prep class. Not everyone needs to take the class, but it helps. The exam with the FDNY costs $25.
