What is a late sign or symptom of shock?

Depending on the primary etiology for shock, signs/symptoms will vary.

Usually, evidence of profound or severe shock, without medical interventions, consist of severe neurological deficits (obtunded, coma), however, this is more likely secondary to the effects of shock (uremia, acidosis, hypoxia). Purely speaking, the late sign/symptom of shock is death. Shock in of itself is already a late sign/symptom (progression) of a primary insult to the body (cardiogenic: myocardial infarction or heart attack, heart failure; distributive: Infection, anaphylaxis, neurogenic; Hypovolemic: hemorrhage).

So, the answer is death.

The signs/symptoms of shock (late sign/symptom of primary insult):

Cardiogenic: heart failure (shortness of breath, cough, swelling of lower extremities)

Distributive: Infections (fever, elevated breathing rate, elevated heart rate, warm extremities), anaphylaxis (allergy to a recent insult, shortness of breath, elevated heart rate, warm extremities, hives), neurogenic (recent trauma to spinal cord, normal-low heart rate, quadriplegia, warm extremities), other inflammatory: pancreatitis

Hypovolemic: Hemorrhagic (bleeding from a source), dehydration (cool skin clamy skin, passing out on walking or feeling like passing out on standing, dry lips/mouth, inadequate drinking of fluids)

How does dehydration kill?

Dehydration occurs when the body excretes fluids (via sweat and urine) that is not sufficiently replaced. Illness can hasten dehydration just as can hot/dry conditions and intense exertion, as diarrhoea and vomiting accelerate the loss of fluids and hinder re-absorption.

As electrolyte levels change, cells toxify or become turgid and fail. Blood becomes less efficient; the heart struggles to compensate as your muscles and nervous system begin to falter. You eventually stop sweating as you lose more fluid; your organs begin to overheat and tissues start to die.

Eventually, organ failure resulting from heat stroke and massive cell death leads to the loss of life functions.

Does urine stop pain in bee stings?

No..that's an old wifes tale. Try some insect bite creams from the RX drug store.

Answer

Never heard of that. I have heard of making a paste of tenderizer and a small amount of water to put on a sting. Also baking soda paste.

Absolutely! It is not a wife's tale at all. When I was young and we were working out in the woods and got stung, the first thing we did is pee on it. I think it is the amonia in the urine. These other guys that answered are city people. It is country people that know about this home remedy.

How do you treat an electric burn?

The treatment for an electrical burn follows the general rule when treating any burn.

WARNING: The most important thing when treating an electrical burn is to ensure that the electricity source that caused the injury in the first place is switched off. Do this by calling you National Emergency Number and stating your location. Only when the electrical source is turned off, do you approach and offer your help.

Remove any constricting clothing and jewellery so that should swelling occur, they will not constrict circulation.

Cool the burn by immersing it in cold, running water for at least 15 minutes. Always check the limbs for an "exit" wound where the current would have gone to ground.

Call for urgent medical help and have the patient dispatched to hospital without delay.

Why is bleeding considered good for a wound?

Bleeding is considered good for a wound because it cleans the injured area. However, you should not let a wound bleed too much. If the wound continue to bleed apply pressure and raise the level of the wound above the heart if possible to decrease blood flow.

Blood also contains clotting agents, which will help to create the scab that will cover the wound during the healing process.

Who should not do the Valsalva maneuver?

The Valsalva maneuver should not be performed by patients who have severe coronary artery disease, have experienced recent heart attack, or have a moderate to severe reduction in blood volume.

Why do you need scissors in a first aid kit?

Scissors are needed in first aid kits in order to cut away clothing which cover the wound area without moving the wounded person. For example, a person wearing jeans and fell, breaking his thigh. It is necessary to uncover the leg in order to assess the wound. Without scissors, the jeans would have to be removed in a way which can cause extreme damage to the leg.

Of course the scissors used must be of special design for first aid, such that there is no danger of causing additional wounds in the process of cutting off the clothing.

How long does it take for the healing process of a cut to start?

The healing process of a cut is going to start with the clotting (scabbing over) of that injury and progress from there. Provided the cut is properly cleaned and taken care of, the healing time will generally less.

What circumstances should you touch an open wound with your fingers?

When possible, you should use a clean dry cloth, even a shirt, scarf, necktie, etc. However, if an artery has been cut, you will likely have to use your bare hand(s) until you can grab or obtain a cloth. Any time a wound bleeds profusely, or the wound is pumping blood (sign of arterial bleed), the wound requires immediate pressure.

NOTE: The scalp has a huge supply of blood vessels. So head wounds bleed much more even for minor cuts. But a few minutes of pressure should slow or stop the bleed from a head wound.

What does deformity mean in first aid?

Deformity, in a prehospital emergency context means any structural abnormalities of the body observed primarily through through sight and palpation. Auscultation may also be used to diagnose internal deformity or abnormalities.

A good way of determining whether something is deformed (eg swollen, bent etc) is to compare the affected side with the other. For example, if the right hand appears deformed upon palpation, compare this with the left hand. If the right hand appears to be bigger then the left hand, it is a good indication of a deformity caused by swelling.
