What do you do to ease the pain when you wake up in the middle of the night with a cramp in your calf muscles?

* Happens to me occasionally; my doctor advises (a) to keep an eye on the amount of salt in my diet (including that in mineral water and so on) and (b) if it happens, swing the feet off the bed and put them flat on the floor. As the pain eases, walk to the nearest cold floor -- perhaps the bathroom -- and stand there, again with the feet flat on the floor.

If it keeps happening, see your doctor for a health check. * Respectfully, the regimen described above would work better for foot cramping, perhaps as the result of circulatory or cardiac issues. From the description, I think this is a different problem altogether.

Two lines of thought present themselves:

(1) If you've had a lot of exercise that day (for you), been hot and sweaty, or of course both, you may be cramping as a result of an electrolytic imbalance. This happens to athletes all the time. Try eating a couple of bananas (high in potassium), drink a sports drink (not the energy kind; the re-hydration kid), or do both. See if the problem passes or eases in 15 minutes or so.

(2) Another possibility is that this sort of cramping is occasionally a side-effect of back injuries in the Lumbar region. The huge nerve plexus that controls the legs branches out from the spinal cord at the Lumbar region of the spine, usually around the vertebrae called L4 and L5. From there, those nerves become the Sciatic nerves that run down each leg. This is the area we call the small of the back. If you've had a back injury in this area, or suffer from chronic back problems in the lumbar region, cramping can occur as a result of the misfiring of the nerves that activate these muscles. Symptoms will typically occur in such a way that both feet turn inwards (decorticate flexion). If this is what's happening to you, consider talking to your doctor about Muscle Relaxants. I like Skelaxin especially for this, as it doesn't seem to present the lingering fatigue that other, more intense, muscle relaxants do, but you'll need to get with your doctor on that.

If this goes away -- great. If not, you may want to have a chat with your doc -- especially if you're suffering from some spinal problems.

Do cuts heal faster when covered?

Yes and no. In order for a cut to heal fast and with minimal scarring, a certain amount of moisture is needed (the the wound bed itself). If the cut is not covered there is more of a chance of pulling that can lead to pain and scarring. When using a cover, such as a band-aid, moisture will be locked in and the cut may heal bit faster. However, moist environments are a breeding ground for bacteria. Moisture can also lead to the healthy skin becoming soft, swollen, and wrinkled (like when you stay in a bath too long). This is called hyperhydration or maceration. Although maceration usually clears up after exposure to air, it can lead to increased sensitivity, infection, and in extreme cases more injury (since this skin is more susceptible to injury from rubbing or friction.

That is why, I would recommend keeping a wound covered when their is potential exposure to dirt, etc. But keeping it uncovered or lightly covered at other times. It is also important to replace wet bandages and dry the area thoroughly before recovering.

Is it bad that theres a lump under the skin in front of my ear and my ear does not drain everytime i have an ear infection and could the drainage problem be causing the lump?

I currently have a hard lump in front of my ear - has been there for a few months. i did not know that I had fluid in my ears but at the drs when I was having the lump examined - she found the fluid. I am on antibiotics right now to treat my ears. The thought my dr has is that the ear infection caused my glands to swell. If the lump does not go away after 10 days of antibiotics - I am having an ultra sound done. My lump does not hurt - but something is causing me to have a head ache ALL day long :(

How do you heal a very bad deep big scratch and How can you make sure it doesn't scar?

It will heal itself. Keep it clean with water and mild soap. Put some Vaseline on it and wrap it to keep things from getting in it. Scars can't be prevented.

Why do some minor wounds ooze a yellow substance?

If the yellow substance is transparent, it's serous fluid -- the fluid that acts as a medium to hold and move blood cells. When wounds heal, part of the process is to form a sterile barrier, but if this barrier is slightly permeable, and the body flushes serum through it in an outwards direction, it can act as a cleaning mechanism. It's a healthy sign. Cloudy or murky yellow fluid -- pus -- is however a sign of infection. It's a slurry of bacteria, dead and alive, and antibodies, also dead and alive. You can help your body along here by applying an antiseptic like betadyne or hydrogen peroxide.

What is the best way to relieve choking in a responsive adult?

If they are coughing, encourage them to keep coughing. DO NOT PAT THEIR BACKS, this may lodge the object further in their throat.

If they are no longer coughing, and can not breathe at all, the hiemlec (sp?) maneuver is your best option.
