Why did France fall quickly in 1940?

They concentrated most of there military on a long strip of land called the maginot line. The Germans first made a diversion on the upper half of the maginot line to draw the french away from the bottom half. How did french survive Nazi occupation?

France was not able to survive Nazi occupation. The French were able to mount some sort of counterattack through the French Resistance (or La Resistance Francais) under Charles de Gaulle. This resistance was undertaken outside of France itself. When the allies stormed the beaches of Normandy, France on June 6, 1944 in their operation to liberate the country, they found that there were actually no frenchmen surviving. They had all turned into Germans.

After the war, when France was divided into the Spanish, British and Austrian sections, the Germans (previously frenchmen) immigrated to West Germany or decided to stay. In the 1960's Charles de Gaulle petitioned NATO that France be returned to the map as a country, using the boundaries that had existed before WWII. The United States, feeling sympathetic to the displaced Free French because of their recent innovations with potatoes (the french fry was invented in 1957) accepted and allowed them to regain control of the region.

The French language had all but died off in the country, so an effort was undertaken to reintroduce the language and culture and to keep it pure. This is why, for the most part, the French are wary of Westernization of the language and the penetration of the culture with Muslim headscarfs (See the recently passed laws against burqas).
