Margot Frank was Anne Franks sister and they didn't get along at first (Anne called Margot a goody-goody at first) but then they become really close. Margot was kind of the "voice of reason" in a way because Anne was a joker and she was impatient... that's how I see it!
Margot Frank died of typhus in 1945

What was Hitler's strategy for attacking France first?

Hitler didn't believe that France and Great Britain would go to war over Poland. Once the war was on, Germany attempted to find a peace with France and Great Britain but failed. Germany then embarked on a series of operations to create security in the west. First Norway was invaded to preserve iron ore shipments. Then the conquest of France in 1940. Hitler and Germany wanted revenge for the losses of World War I and the defeat of France was part of the plan. After the Fall of France again Germany tried to deal with Great Britain. The Brits would not budge. The Battle of Britain was a mistake that cost Germany much of its air power. The German believed that with France subdued, the British were less of a threat. The Germans sent some troops to back up Italy in North Africa and began a massive effort to build a huge submarine fleet to destroy the British merchant fleet. The Germans planned to Invade Russia in early 1941, but were forced to delay in order to deal with Yugoslavia and Greece. Italy's mistakes in North Africa and in Greece cost Germany Men and time. By the time of invasion of Russia in June 1941 the German Air Force had still not rebuilt itself.
The question was why did the Germans invade Russia. Germany's main goal in the war was living space for its people. Hitler saw the vast Soviet Union as a perfect place to settle the new German people he was breeding.

The German military believed in fast campaigns and hoped to avoid the vast killing fields of World War I. Quick fast wars were cheaper. The major features of Hitler's strategy were fast conquests, defeating the western powers and a huge land grab from the Soviet Union. Given time, Hitler believed that his Fortress Europa could resist any attempts from the outside to dislodge German occupation. He failed because he could not conquer Russia, which would have provided immense resources. And because the Allies benefitted greatly from the entrance of the US into the war in December, 1941.

How did Hitler go against the Treaty of Versailles by invading Rineland?

The moment that Hitler came into power, he stopped paying reparations to the Allies. The treaty of Versailles stated that Germany was to pay 6,600,000,000 pounds over a period of 66 years. In 1924, Stresemann signed the Dawes plan which meant that Germany could pay what she could actually afford each year, starting with a sum of 50 million pounds.

When Hitler stopped paying reparations, he took the money that should have gone to the Allies and put it straight back into the German economy.

He then disregarded the Arms restrictions put on Germany in the Treaty and built the army up from 100,000 men to 900,000 men.Not only did Hitler want to turn Germany into a war machine, but this increase in infantry provided more jobs for the thousands of unemployed Germans.

After making an appeasement with Britain and France, Hitler re-militarised the Rhineland. The Treaty of Versailles stated that the Rhineland was to be completely demilitarized and occupied by Allied armies for 15 years. After signing the Munich Treaty with Britain, France and Italy ( Chamberlain, Dalandier and Mussolini ) the French withdrew their troops from the Rhineland. Hitler used the Rhineland to test his boundaries and see if the Allies would interfere. They did not.

Hitler made an alliance with Austria. The Treaty of Versailles said that Germany was not allowed to unite with Austria, her German speaking neighbour, and create one German nation. Hitler did it anyway.

Did any countries do anything to help stop the events of the Holocaust?

No! The Holocaust was well hidden from the world, and when word did get out most countries couldn't fathom that such atrocities could exist and it took them a time to let it sink in. Yes, Britain, U.S. and Canada to name a few liberated the Jewish people. Let us not forget there were Gypsies, Poles, etc., in those concentration camps as well and not all German people were under Hitler's rule. One thing we must remember during wartime is that propoganda flies high and I do believe that other countries felt this was the case until it was proved otherwise. Marcy

Are Germany and the Soviet Union were friends at World War 2?

The US and Soviet Union were never really friends, they were once allys to defeat the growing German Nazi threat, but not friends. The reason being that the Soviet Union was Communist and due to the United States' perception of communism (that it was a threat to our democratic way of living) and our fear that communism would soon out number the democratic countries of the world, we began a Cold War with them. Basically a war with no fighting, its like a staring contest, whoever blinks loses. The United States mean while supplied weapons to democratic countries and the Soviets provided weapons to communist countries. However, while this was going on the USSR was having problems in its own country and was quickly dissolved into seperate countries, and since the USSR no longer existed the US no longer had anything to fear.

Long story short because they were communist.

Where did Jews go to be safe when Hitler was ruler?

Some places were Britain, Palestine(later known as Israel),and another place was France.

___

Refugees from Nazi Germany were not able to pick and chose. Practically all countries had strict controls on immigration, and these were rigorously enforced. At the time, very few countries (if any) had a legally enshrined right to asylum.

Many Jews fled to neighbouring countries, such as France, Belgium and the Netherlands. In those cases they again came under Nazi control when these countries were invaded ... Some fled to Switzerland, but the Swiss authorities were cautious.

The favoured destination of many German Jews was the U.S. but there were strict quotas. Nevertheless, between 1933 and 1941 the U.S admitted about 250,000 refugees from Germany and Austria.

Other countries where refugees, both Jewish and non-Jewish, migrated to included:

  • Britain (71,000)
  • Australia (50,000)
  • Argentina (until 1938, when the government banned further immigration)
  • The Soviet Union (mainly for active Communists - admitted about 250,000 refugees, Jewish and non-Jewish, from Nazi Germany)
  • City of Shanghai, China (under Japanese rule - admitted about 25,000)
  • South Africa (until 1935 only, when a ban was introduced)
  • Palestine (but strict quotas)
  • US - (250,000 - see above)
  • Canada (admitted only 8,000 refugees)
  • Turkey admitted about ... 1,000

How did some jews survive the war holocaust?

Some were forced to work and as long as they were able to perform their jobs they lived. Others were just lucky enough to not have their numbers called. NAZI's were killing as fast as they could but it took time and the unlucky ones were murdered before the Allies were able to stop the killing. Most of the ones who survived were just lucky. A very small number of Jews were used for office work in some camps - jobs such as sorting and listing valuables seized from new arrivals. Although they were fed miserable rations, the work was less strenuous than, for example, quarrying. Also those sent to the camps very late in the war stood a better chance of survival than others, provided they were 'selected' for work and not sent straight to the gas chambers. Psychological resilience may have helped some. However, as already stated, even these prisoners needed good luck. No amount of resilience could help against the outbreaks of disease that swept through many of the camps.
