Glue and Adhesives

Glue or adhesive is a liquid or semi-liquid mixture that bonds items together. It can be natural or synthetic, one part or two part, the latest development or an ancient recipe that still works. This is the place for glue/adhesive questions, such as - how to use it successfully, what it's made of, or how to get it out of your hair!

What solvent to use to remove metal letters fixed on glass with UV Glue?

This can vary depending on the particular UV adhesive used. One of the easier to get solvents often used is acetone, available at most hardware stores.

ANS 2 The best way of doing this is to heat the letters with a hot air gun, then slide a wood chisel under and force the letters off. The remaining residue can be removed with MEK or possibly acetone.

You used double sided tape on a leather couch and it has left adhesive residue on the leather How can you get if off?

Try Goo Gone first, it's quite benign and will often move glue and leave no marks on fabrics and leather. Goof Off is stronger and will remove more sticky glues, but may leave a mark. Test it first on a piece that's not normally visible.

What is the advantage of using threaded fasteners to secure structural components as opposed to welding or adhesives?

It is easier to remove something screwed in than something glued or welded in.

Further threaded fasteners go deeper than adhesives, giving more of the object to hold onto than just the surface areas. This is good for anything attaching to wood which is a softer material.

Stainless steel doesn't weld too well, particularly to non-stainless steel, so fasteners may prove an easier alternative. As I heard that stainless steel is cheaper it can save money as well.

Different types of metal or even different thicknesses of a metal can be hard to weld or just may not be weldable at all and so fasteners are needed.

Sometimes a weld can can be brittle and snap or an adhesive wear away from small movements. Fasteners can be more reliable if you're not a pro.

Fasteners can be cheaper as well in many circumstances. A drill is usually cheaper than a MIG Welder. lol.

To remove super glue from brass use very hot soapy water. You need to be patient, and after a few applications, the superglue should be removed.Note that with very stubborn super glue stains you may need to use almost boiling water to get rid of all the super glue residue. As with any sort of stain, try to clean as soon as the super glue is applied as it's easier to remove before it sets.

Who invented glue and when was it invented?

There is no record of who invented the first glue. It has been in use for thousands of years in different forms. Early forms of glue have been found in caves in Europe. The Greeks and Romans made extensive use of glues in tiling, much of which still exists today (so their glue was pretty good.) The early Egyptians used fish bone glue at least 5,000 years ago.

Is glue bad for you in any way?

If I understand your question right, I can say from training by the Saint John Ambulance First Aid classes, breathing in solvents and glue can severely damage the brain, causing some part of the brain to become smaller, and the person becomes much lesser intelligent, cannot understand as much, and can be unable to move, and spend their lives unable to understand and sometimes paralysed: unable to walk, talk, or eat anymore. That's why solvent abuse or glue-sniffing is horrible: yes, it's bad and the damage to the brain is permanent: there's no cure, its a life-wrecker and that's why in New Zealand, there's hardly any glue sold in the shops. This is about deliberate sniffing in of solvents and glues.

However: if you are using glue to paste things onto paper and so forth, it is not so damaging because there's much less glue sniffed into the nose. If you have doubts now, use a mask over the mouth and nose while using strong-smelling glues, or see if you can go outside to glue your paper together and so forth, so the fresh air cuts down on the amount of glue smelt by the nose.

The difference between use and abuse of glues is simple: it depends on how strong the glue is and how much is smelt into the nose and mouth. If you are asking about glue-sniffing: don't try it, some people never walk again. It IS bad: and there's no cure, at all, for the damage done. That's why the Police are against such things.
