Gluten

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and other related grains. It is used in baking to give dough elasticity, as well as other cooking and non food items. Gluten-free diets are void of grains containing gluten and are often used for those with celiac disease.

Yes it is gluten and dairy free. This is because it is not milk chocolate or anything else with dairy in it. it usually doesn't have anything added to it either. So its okay for people who are allergic to dairy or gluten.

What is a gluten free diet?

Everything except for gluten.
Meat, fish, vegetables, fruit. Nothing with flour. Certain grains--corn and rice, are allowed. The main food to avoid is wheat. Rye, barley, and related grains also contain gluten and should be avoided.
Rice, potatoes, soy, corn is allowed.
Dairy products are allowed.
"Grain alternatives" are allowed--wild rice, quinoa, buckwheat, and amaranth are allowed (unless processed in a facility that also processes wheat)
Alcoholic beverages not brewed with wheat--cider, wines, certain distilled spirits are okay.

Be careful of wheat or flour containing products such as soy sauce, certain gravies, certain processed meats, malt flavoring, modified food starch. Some people have to be careful of non-food items such as adhesives that you lick, certain lipsticks, play dough, medicines/vitamins with wheat as a binder. Always check ingredients; if you go to a restaurant, ask about the ingredients.

What can't you eat if you have wheat and gluten allergies?

Barley, rye, oats, and wheat. Gluten can also be in natural and artificial flavor and caramel color. It may also be in maltoextrin, modified food starch, and is always in malt. It can be in a lot of other things too, I should know. I've had Celiac disease for almost three years. My mom and I did a lot of research and put a big binder of gluten free foods and brands together. I would recommend calling the company if you aren't sure about something.

Great things you CAN eat are brown rice and quinoa. They make a lot of products with these ingredients as a base (i.e. brown rice bread, pasta etc..)

Edit: Actually the oats themselves don't contain gluten but oats are generally contaminated in transport with wheat which is why we avoid oats. It is possible to get oats that have not been contaminated and are therefore gluten free. A long term study published in 2007 showed no detrimental effects on celiacs from eating these oats.

What contains wheat gluten?

Not normally. All potato breads I have seen at regular grocery stores are NOT gluten-free, but check the label to be sure. They are made with a combination of pototo and wheat flours.

Is egg mayonnaise gluten free?

yes. flour, wheat, oats, rye, and barley are the only items you shouldn't eat.

Not so sure this answer is true or accurate. chickens are fed on all kinds of mixed seed and cereal feed and their eggs contain gluten. So we need a new food descriptor for eggs to say they are guaranteed gluten free.. And preferably rapeseed free as there are some (myself for one) who are allergic to rapeseed oil toxicities.

What foods should you avoid if you have an intolerance to gluten?

Answer: Foods containing Gluten.

Answer: Do not eat wheat, rye, barley and oats*. U.S. labelling laws now require that WHEAT be listed on ingredients labels: look at the bottom of the ingredients list for a short list of which of the major allergens the food may contain (for example: CONTAINS: MILK, SOY, WHEAT) then if it's not there or there is no list, look within the full list of ingredients for the word "wheat" (for example: "MODIFIED FOOD STARCH (from wheat)"). If you see wheat listed in either place, celiacs should not eat it. If wheat is NOT listed, you still need to be concerned with rye, barley and oats, which are most often spelled out, however barley is also commonly found in varieties of "malt" (including malt syrup and malt flavoring). These ingredients can also hide under other catch-all names like "Natural Flavorings". When in doubt, contact the manufacturer.

*oats are grown in rotation with wheat in most U.S. fields so cross-contamination is an issue. Some suppliers now grow oats in isolated fields and process them in dedicated mills to ensure that they are not cross-contaminated, however some celiacs continue to react to even these specially grown oats: if you have celiac disease, talk to your doctor before consuming oats. On a more general level, "some foods to avoid" can be just about anything that has an ingredient list, since wheat, in particular, is in most processed foods. Unless specifically labeled gluten-free, a celiac would avoid bread (including pizza, and even corn bread, and other quick breads like muffins or pancakes), donuts, cookies, pasta, chicken-fried anything, most commercial cereals, many commercial soups. Celiacs should also question french fries sold in restaurants: if fried in the same frier as the chicken nuggets and the breaded onion rings, cross contamination is a major issue. On the other hand, other than wheat, rye, barley or oats (and their cousins spelt, kamut, and triticale) whole foods are safe: fruits and vegetables, nuts and unprocessed meats, dairy products and grains other than those four.

Is there yeast or gluten in a smirnoff ice?

Yes. Most liquor is a wheat, rye, corn, rice. Smirnoff is corn based and corn is gluten free, but since it is "ice" it may add a gluten source to the liquor . The yeast in liquor ferments the mash and is a fungus so it doesn't contribute to gluten. I am on a gluten free diet and personally I wouldn't drink since it does change the chemical makeup in your body. Read the bottle carefully or call the company to be sure.

Do corn chips have gluten?

No, potato chips typically do not have gluten in them. Gluten is a protein found in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. Potato chips are made from potatoes, which do not contain gluten. However, it is important to check the ingredients of any potato chip product as some may contain gluten in the form of flavorings, seasonings, or other added ingredients.

For example, some potato chips may contain wheat flour, which is a source of gluten. Additionally, some manufacturers may use a shared fryer to make potato chips and other gluten-containing snacks, which could potentially lead to cross-contamination. Therefore, it is important to read the ingredients of any potato chip product before consuming to ensure that it is free of gluten.

In addition, some potato chips may contain maltodextrin, which is a starch derived from wheat. While maltodextrin is not considered to be a source of gluten by the FDA, it is important to note that it is a wheat-based ingredient, and some individuals may have a sensitivity to it.

Overall, potato chips do not typically contain gluten, but it is important to read the ingredients of any potato chip product to ensure that it is free of any added gluten ingredients. Additionally, individuals with a gluten sensitivity should be aware of the potential for cross-contamination in shared fryers.

What does gluten do to the body?

I'm not sure how it affects others and if they experience the same symptoms but I become increasingly narky and very short tempered, I misplace things more than usual, I feel like I'm caved in and unaware of what's going on around me, my eyes feel heavy, I feel very fatigued and after eating wheat I often enter into a really deep sleep for 2 hours (I'm normally a light sleeper in the day when power napping, which I may add is rare if I'm not eating wheat). In conclusion I just feel awful, really awful. I can't concentrate on anything and I feel depressed. I am so glad I gave up wheat!

If anyone else has experienced anything similar please post away :)

My Experience:

I have known about the Gluten issue for a few years in my own life. Before I knew about it I would have coffee and toast everyday. I used to get panic attacks on the highway, but kept torturing myself for 5+ years. I developed this sometime after college, as I was semi-tolerant of gluten beforehand. I was in the Army a few years after high school and then in my senior year of college I started getting panicky.

I cannot believe the number of doctors that do not have a clue. I got the Enterolab test a few months ago, I still came up positive. I have been off gluten for over a year, intermittent before that as I always felt better when I just ate fruits and vegetables. I do cheat on the diet occasionally, with Chinese food, and do I pay! Actually, it was the other day. I Googled gluten and then brain. I saw your description of Gluten illness and could relate!!! Yes Gluten is like a sleeping pill for me! My eyes get glassed over. I came up negative on the blood tests and I am not allergic to wheat. Many doctors are lame. I love the drgluten.com website!

What is does:

The gluten goes into your small intestines and cannot be broken down by normal body processes. It then enters through your intestinal wall intact attached to other broken down amino acids. The body creates antibodies against it but in the process kills the proteins its attached to. If the gluten gets to your pancrease it can lead to type 1 diabetes, if it reaches your brain it can cause MS which can lead to parylization. It can create a leaky gut (hole in small intestine) which is essentially crones disease.

Basically DO NOT EAT IT!

Is it healthier to eat gluten free food?

yes gluten free is healthy in a way because you dont consume as much junk when you switch to the gluten free diet, but it is unhealthy at the same time because if you eat only gluten free foods you have also blocked out the stuff that is good for you such as whole grain bread etc. If your celiac i guess you have no choice, but if you just want to eat healthier i suggest that you do keep some whole grain bread and some more of the stuff that is good for you in your diet as well.

hope this helps :)

Does coffee have gluten?

There is no straightforward answer here.

Coffee is naturally gluten-free; however, flavorings are sometimes added to it that contain gluten. There are several brands of coffee that are produced in 100% gluten-free facilities, and those may be worth checking into.

BUT I, personally, have celiac disease and have had problems drinking even "gluten-free" coffee. After reading many blogs on the topic, a large number of other celiacs have also claimed a sensitivity to coffee.

I think that even among celiacs, it depends on the person.
