Why Google doesn't sell its operating system the same way as Microsoft does (in DVDs)?
Google primarily offers its operating system, Chrome OS, as a cloud-based service rather than selling it on physical media like DVDs, which aligns with its focus on web-centric applications and services. This approach allows for seamless updates, easy access to applications via the cloud, and a lightweight system that caters to users who rely on internet connectivity. Additionally, Google partners with hardware manufacturers to pre-install Chrome OS on devices, streamlining the user experience and reducing the need for physical distribution.

What does the term smokestack lightning actually refer to?
The smokestacks were quite high, often the highest thing in the town. Their smoke, thick and black bellowed forth day and night.
When thunderstorms came through town, the lightning often struck the high point of town first - the smokestack. The lightning crackled through the black smoke and the rain creating an eerie, frightening and hellish apparition in the night sky.
To residents who may have imbibed too much liquor (or moonshine!), the spectacle took on an other worldly, almost demonic appearance that stuck in the memory long after the booze wore off. The drink itself came to be known as 'smokestack lightnin'' as it's power surely was the cause of the nightmarish memories.
-Spencer Benedict
I disagree. I think the phrase begun when Howlin' Wolf mishead the lyrics in Charley Patton's "Moon Going Down". Patton's records were popular in the South and Howling Wolf in particular admired Patton. The actual line from Patton was, "Ah the smokestack's black, babe / Bell it shines like gold". Patton's idiosyncratic articulation of "black, babe" sounds a lot like "lightning". I think that's where the whole thing started, and from there people began reconstructing the phrase to give it meaning.
-Uncle Sinner
Correction -
The 'smokestack' Wolf is referring to is from a locomotive train. From the Wolf himself- "We used to sit out in the country and see the trains go by, watch the sparks come out of the smokestack. That was smokestack lightning"

What are the advantages and disadvantages of psychopharmacology?
Advantages
1) Medication can provide quick relief from symptoms. This is useful if the patient's problem is severe but occurs only rarely (e.g. seizures or occasional panic attacks), or if the patient is in immediate physical danger (suicide risk).
2) Some disorders (typically those with a clear biological basis) don't respond to therapy and can only be treated pharmacologically. Again, seizures are an example.
3) Medication is cheaper and less time consuming than therapy.
4) Medication is, to an extent, effective regardless of the patient's attitude. The patient gets better without facing difficult personal issues they would rather ignore.*
Disadvantages
1) Psychiatric drugs can have unpleasant or dangerous side effects. For example, psychosis is a possible side effect of stimulants; it occurs more frequently than people realize.
2) Many drugs are ineffective in the long term if taken regularly. This is certainly the case for antipsychotics and stimulants, and probably also for selective reuptake inhibitor type antidepressants and benzodiazapines. Often you get ~5 years of improvement, then symptoms return. The patient ends up dependent on the drug and worse off than they started.**
3) Psychiatric drugs cause brain damage. Stimulants, and SSRIs are known to be neurotoxic with prolonged use, and benzodiazapines may be as well. Antipsychotics are especially dangerous in this regard: around 20% of regular users develop tardive diskinesia, a permanent movement disorder similar to Parkinsons. They may also impair creativity, empathy, and higher reasoning.
4) Patients are sometimes medicated against their will to control undesirable or inconvenient behavior, even if they aren't a danger themselves or others. This typically happens in mental hospitals or nursing homes.***
5) Minors are given medication before they are capable of understanding the risks and benefits and making a reasoned decision.
6) Stimulants and benzodiazapines can be addictive.
*It's worth asking whether this is truly an advantage. The popular position is that all thought is reducible to physical processes in the brain, so if medication and therapy are equally effective, the end result is equivalent. You can probably tell I disagree..
**The treatment of schizophrenia is a good example of short term benefits and long term damage from medication - the prognosis at 1 year is best in America and Europe, but at 5 yrs and 10 yrs it is better in developing countries where antipsychotics aren't available.

A googolplex is the number 10googol, which can also be written as the number 1 followed by a googol of zeros (i.e. 10100 zeros). : 1 googolplex : = 10googol : = In 1938, Edward Kasner's nine-year-old nephew Milton Sirotta coined the term googol; Milton then proposed the further term googolplex to be "one, followed by writing zeroes until you get tired". Kasner decided to adopt a more formal definition "because different people get tired at different times and it would never do to have [the boxer champion] Carnera be a better mathematician than Dr. Einstein, simply because he had more endurance".[1]
