How did the US become involved in the Gulf War?
Saddam Hussien had been at war with Iran for 8 years. In this time he had used all of his countries' money and resources to fund the war. He saw opportunity in Kuwait because of their vast oilfields and decided to have them for himself. As he massed troops on the border, president Bush saw the need to protect the oil fields, and thus world stability and warned Hussien not to do it. He kept on, and Bush responded by sending in the troops.

When looking at the severe military advantage of Iraq, backed by every superpower in the world including the US and the USSR, and Iran's (who had just experienced a harsh revolution that resulted in the almost complete destruction of Iranian military leadership due to internal purges by the Ayatollah) severe disadvantage, it's a miracle that Iran not only managed to push out the Iraqis in a matter of two years, but also push into Iraqi territory. Iran's use of its superior quality American weaponry combined with its highly mobile battle tactics surprised Iraq's forces. Near the end of the war both countries were resorting more and more to long range ballistic missiles, a time known as the "war of the cities" which resulted in many civilian casualties. Iran's use of child soldiers was common due to the regime earlier unwisely dismantling most of its military out of fear of a coup.
Officially there "nobody winner" since Iran asked Iraq for a cease fire. In body count Iraq would be the winner since Saddam was a unstoppable force in the Iraq-Iran war and gassed and killed many thousands of Iranians. While at the same time gassing and killing people he deemed enemies of the state. When he succeeded in killing hundreds of thousands of enemies of the state he turned his entire military force towards Iran and shortly after they asked Saddam for a cease fire. Saddam declared the war a victory at home and created a large war memorial, complete with a very large pile of Iranian helmets.

Oil. The world needs it, and most of it comes from the Persian Gulf. Iraq, a country then ruled by a military regime and headed by an unstable dictator, threatened to have a choke hold on most of the world's oil supply. It was a situation which demanded immediate attention by the primary consumers of this oil, because an interruption of it would have utterly destroyed their economies. The US has emergency oil reserves for only a few months. Without oil, Stone Age conditions would prevail.

What was the intended goal of the US imposing trade sanctions on Iraq?
(A+)humanitarian needs
Technically, it was supposed to be sanctions by the entire United Nations. Everyone agreed that Sadam had killed far too many and that his invasion of Kuwait was an aggressive act of war. Sadam had openly expressed his admiration for Hitler and wanted to follow his leadership, killing Jews and anyone who he considered to be "not of his type".
After the United Nations passed sanctons against Sadam, Germany, France and Russia started buying his oil, assuring that he was able to continue with his goals and continuing to keep him rich. Prior to the attack of Iraq in THIS war, the U.N. voted MOSTLY in favor of removing Sadam from power, with Germany, France and Russia voting against... Russia has veto power so the vote was irrelevant. That's why the U.N. did not participate in the war.
Whomever told you that they were U.S. sanctions only wanted you to know half of the story.
Combat and non-combat. Some countries preferred to participate but only with non-combat personnel. Japan, for example, did not violate its constitution by sending soldiers but sent non-combat units.
As a country, Iraq, has never attacked the US on it's own soil. However, when the United States invaded Iraq in March, 2003 the Iraqi military, under the control of Saddam Hussain responded unsucessfully. After his forces were defeated, Hussain fled; was eventually captured, tried and then hung for crimes against humanity. Most notable among these were the gasing of Kurdish settlements in the north of Iraq that led to the deaths of thousands of his own citizens. Since the defeat of Hussain's regime, the US along with its allies have occupied Iraq in an attempt to provide security and allow a newly elected government to be formed and then take control of the country.
