What is the meaning of Optical Disk Drives?

use a laser to read and write data. Optical disks have very large storage capacity but they are not fast as hard disks. There are three basic types of optical disks: CD-ROM, WORM and erasable.

DVD-ROM is higher- capacity disc

What is the most common cable used today for connecting a hard drive to the motherboard?

There are different interfaces of which hard drives can be connected to the motherboard of computers.

ATA- More commonly ATA-133, the newest version not compatible with ATA-100(phased out) Typically this setup uses a Ribbon cable, however there are "Round" cables that have been made to reduce the turbulence and promote airflow inside the cases. These drives typically do not spin faster than 7,200 RPMS.

SATA- Serial ATA, uses a thin small cable, typically red. This is the first version, and finding hardware that SATA I is difficult. these drives typicall do not spin faster than 7,200 RPMS

SATA II - AKA SATA 3.0 GB, Uses an identical cable, but transfers data much more quickly. Most hard drives and computer accessories that use SATA are SATA II. Typically SATA II is backwards compatible with SATA I. These drives are currently capable of spinning to a maximum of 10,000 RPMS

SATA III - AKA SATA 6GB/s, use a similar cable but transfers data at twice the rate of SATA II and four times the rate of SATA (first version). SATA III is also backwards compatible. In order to take full advantage of the SATA III technology it is necessary to have a SATA III motherboard, cable and HDD.

SCSI- Pronounced "SKUZZY" a high speed interface typically only used on High end workstations and servers. Has high bandwidth and uses ribbon cables similar in look to ATA, but has more pins and a different connector. Older versions for SCSI required "terminators" on the empty connectors however they are becomming less prevalent and are typically not used on the current SCSI 320 Format. These drives are typically the most expensive and rotate the fastest typically 15,000 RPM's

IS Two important components of the system unit are the microprocessor and the hard disk?

The CPU comprised of three main parts: AlU(ARITHMETIC LOGIC UNIT):- Does the actual Logic comparisons that need to be processed. Control Unit:-Can execute and store the results coming out of ALU. Registers:- store the data that is to be executed next.

What is the difference between a hard drive a hard drive with a retail kit?

I think the retail kit gives you a box, cables, maybe a manual and warranty info while the other does not.

Why do some installations prohibit copying the SOP on to a disk?

The reason why some units disallow the copying of the standard operating procedures (SOP) onto a disk is because it makes it easier to steal operational secrets in case the disc is lost. Military operations need to be safeguarded in a central data center.

Floppy disk disadvantages?

Mainly lack of capacity. A floppy disk is usually 1.44 MB. Modern flash drives, hard drives, etc. are in the gigabytes and terabytes ! You can still use a floppy drive (I have a USB external floppy drive), but it will become more difficult to get new floppy disks as manufacturers abandon a rather antiquated media.

Is there gold in hard drives?

Yes. there is a small amount of gold in pretty every silicon chip. Tiny gold wires connect the silicon chips to the connector pins on the chip's packaging. The connectors are often gold plated too. There are many chips on a hard drive controller pcb.

Where can you get more information on what to look for in a hard drive when shopping for a computer?

What does 160GB Hdd mean?

Answer: In computer terms HDD usually means Hard Disk Drive or High Density Diskette. The GB stands for gigabyte. So the 160 is meaning 160 gigabytes of space on the computer. * One gigabyte can hold over 1000 novels (uncompressed at 100,000 words per novel). * One gigabyte is roughly equal to 17 hours of MP3 music at 128 kbit/s (1,0003 / 128 / 1000 * 8 / 3600 = 17.36). * One gigabyte is roughly equivalent to 12 hours of Flash Video (at 450x370). If you wish to store pictures and media files, go for the highest GB's when purchasing a new computer.

What two file systems can windows use to format a hard drive and which system supports the most storage capacity?

Windows basically uses two file systems:-

1. FAT

2. NTFS

FAT stands for File Allocation Table. FAT was first introduced in 1980 as FAT12, followed by FAT16 in 1984 and finally FAT32 in 1996. The numbers 12, 16 and 32 represent the bit size of a FAT system.

Nowadays, in Windows we get to see two FAT options which are FAT and FAT32. Simply FAT means FAT16. FAT16 partition size is limited at 2 GB for sector size of 512 bytes.FAT32 volume size is 2 TB for a sector size of 512 bytes and 16 TB for a sector size of 4,096 bytes. The maximum possible size for a file on a FAT32 volume is 4 GB minus 1 byte or 4,294,967,295 (232−1) bytes.

NTFS stands for New Technology File System and supersedes FAT system. NTFS was introduced in 1993. It allows a maximum volume size of 256TB and 16TB file for sector size of 64KB. It has numerous advantages over FAT systems.

Microsoft is coming up with a new file system with the release of Windows 8.

How do you transfer free space to a c drive?

You can't, not easily. The partitions (D and C) are set up permanently. In order to change them, you would have to completely erase the hard drive and start over.

Its is possible by using partation magic

What happens to a broken hard drive?

The same thing that happens when you drop mostly anything: they could break, though modern drives will take quite a battering with no damage.

Answer:The impact can shatter the discs, break the reader arm, or damage the circuit board. If the discs are intact, the data can be retrieved by installing them in another drive, but it will cost you an arm and a leg.

What memory modules must be installed in pairs?

You did have to install Dimms in pairs for older computers which used RDRAMs, but computers nowadys use SDRAMs. So, you can mix combination of RAMs of different sizes and speeds without any problem.

Do you have to remove external hard disk each time you turn off your laptop?

No, you will not have to remove an external hard disk each time you turn your laptop off.

When a computer is turned off what happens to the data on a Hard Drive?

The entire point of a hard disk is that nothing happens to your data when it's turned off. Data is stored by magnetizing tiny areas of the surface of the disk. They don't need electricity to stay magnetized.

How do you remove contigous files?

I'm not sure I understand why you're asking this question. Contiguous files are simply files that are not broken up in pieces. As you disk fills up, when you delete files to make more room, the free space is scattered all over the disk. If you download a large file, or install software, there may not be enough room in any single place on the disk to fit the entire file. Windows puts chunks of the file in several places to make it fit. This can slow down the time it takes to load the file. When you defrag the disk, it attempts to make as many files contiguous as possible. Deleting contiguous files should be exactly the same procedure as with any other file. However, some files that the system uses must be contiguous. They can't be deleted because they are in use by the system. If you have any questions, please email me or check out my profile.

Also industry standard allows a (1-1.3%) a certain amount of bad sectors per drive to be acceptable

How do you know that your crossover cable is good?

You can use an ohmmeter to test the continuity of all wires.

Alternately, you can put it in place of a known working cross-over cable and see if the network connection still functions.

Remember that many modern network devices detect whether the cable is straight or cross-over, so perhaps you don't even need a cross-over.

What factors should you use to compare external hard drives?

  • Price. The best thing is to keep the budget in mind.
  • Capacity.
  • Reliability. The reliability and the integrity of the data when stored over the storage media should be considered.
  • Interface (USB, SCSI, PATA, SATA)
  • Size. The size is considered in terms of the physical dimensions. As the size decreases physically the rate or the price tag shoots up.
  • Speed & performance.

Should you format a new hard drive?

Depending on your hard drive. If it's a new external hard drive you should check to see if it's preformatted for your computer. For example I just bought a new LaCie drive for my Mac Powerbook. It already comes preformatted in HFS mode so I didn't have to do anything. Other external hard drives allow you to put files in a hard drive without formatting, but this can cause problems later on down the road. Some Mac who have Seagate external hard drives have reported a clicking noise and malfunctioning. I personally have had this experience as I was sharing it with a PC (Seagate doesn't recommend this). It wasn't formatted thus I couldn't put some simple stuff on the hard drive such as folders with folder icons! To format any hard drive, connect your hard drive to you Mac. Then open the disk utilities application that can be found in the utilities folder in the application folder. Select the hard drive you want to format. To find out the rest, google it. haha. I kind of forget what which button to push, but it's fairly simple. I would recommend getting specific drives for PC and Mac. You can never be too safe when backing up your information. So far my LaCie works great and is quieter than my Seagate.
