How does a Hermit Crab swim?

It depends. If it is a land hermit crab "no", you do not want to put it in deep water to make it swim, it can actually just drown and die. I used to have a hermit crab and my friends babysitted it and when i got back the water bowl was spilt and my hermit crab was laying on its side, dead. If it is a water hermit crab, "yes". It needs water so it can swim, and just relax in it. it needs it!

How do you tell if youre hermit crab is dead?

Usually to see if its dead, you smell the tank its in. If the smell is gross and very overwhelming, most likely its dead. If it only has a slightly fishy smell, its probably fine.

* Lots of times people confuse molting with death. Be sure your hermit crab isn't just molting before you get rid of it. * if you think your hermie may be dead, GENTLY shake the shell or GENTLY blow into it , the hermie may fall out. but make sure tis not just molting. My hermit crabs Shelly and Howard haven't moved for 3 weeks now, but I do know that usually when they molt they burrow under the sand or any other earth material you have. But since my hermit crabs haven't moved and haven't burrowed then it's time to dip them in the water and see if they're alive. * No one likes it when their crab dies. But when the crab gets too old it will just die. Since hermit crabs are nocturnal they usually die overnight. The hermit crab might start digging a hole in the sand or will stay on the top layer. (If they die underground you will want to dig it up, or else it will start to stink.) When your crab dies it will stink like fish for many days. Then you will have to remove it from its tank.

They can travel a mile or more per day foraging for food. They require an extremely varied diet, so it is necessary for them to scavenge far and wide.

Some are called "tree crabs" (Coenobita Clypeatus, or Purple Pincer crabs) as they spend a large part of their time up in trees.

Do saltwater hermit crabs molt?

Hermit Crabs do shed there skin (when they molt) - which is when you have to pay VERY close attention. You can tell when they're molting because they eat extra, dig holes alot more and sleep most of the day and night.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hermit Crabs look like they die and fell out of thier shell. The skin they left behind looks just like them but they only grew out of thier old skin and are still growing like a snake, cicada, or anything else that sheds and leaves skin or a shell behind. So don't worry. I found one my first time having one. It looked like it was transfering into a new shell. It was in there for a while so when i picked it up the skin fell off and when i thought it died I almost threw the shell away but I looked in the shell and the crab was in the shell still. So thats when i looked up this question. When hermit crabs actually die they look like a shrimp with their tail but when they molt they don't shed all the way to their tail, only half way. HOPE THIS HELPED.
