Many things helped:

- the lack of a free press, one that was allowed to speak out against the government, even though the goverment was supposedly fighting to maintain thier freedom and way of life.

- the lack of international pressure, Germany was one of the (if not the) greatest economic power and other countries were afraid to stand up to what it was doing to the Jews before the war, this added to the fact that most countries did not want Jews either.

- the hiding of what it was really doing under an emergency powers act, giving the Nazis power to do what they wanted to the 'enemy within' without allowing people the right to question it.

- there of course were many other factors.

Blight is a fungal infection that can look similar to some other symptoms, check for small black fruiting bodies on the recently killed leaves and stems.

When dry you can prune the infected growth back about 2inches into live wood, being careful to sterilize your clippers after each cut and destroying all the cuttings.

There are fungicides that can be used but some are restricted use and they may not be available for use in your area.

Would it be wise to severly restrict your food intake?

No, it wouldn't be wise at all because that would just lower your metabolism. Your body will think your starving, so it will slow down. Plus, there are a whole bunch of other health problems you could experience; this is not excluding death. Once you start down a path it is hard to stop. I never found skin and bones attractive. No food=No energy.
