Horse Behavior

Horse behavior refers to the basic behavior of a horse as a prey animal with a well-developed fight-or-flight instinct. Their first basic response to a threat is to escape, though some instances where flight is untenable, horses are known to stand their ground and defend for themselves.

Can a horse die from rat poison?

As far as I know no. The reason that nobody eats them is that it is so difficult to take off there skin (as it is so hard) and even if you do take it off there is barely any meat.

I don't know if this answer is correct. Probably some kinds of seahorse are poisonous!

If your horses ears are slightly tilted backwords what does it mean?

When a horse puts both ears backward he is most likely upset or annoyed with something. This doesn't necessarily mean he will do anything bad, but use caution when approaching a horse with his ears back. He may try to kick or even bite if he feels threatened. If you are riding a horse with his ears back, try to calm him down by patting his neck. If just one ear is slanted back, he is probably trying to figure out your riding cues.

How long does a foal nurse from its mother?

The length of time that a pony foal will nurse depends on the living situation of the pony mare. If the mare lives on a busy breeding farm the foal will likely only be able to nurse up until the fourth to sixth month of age as it will be manually weaned by a human. If the mare is allowed to keep the foal at her side without human interference in the weaning process the foal could nurse up until it is a year old before the mare would naturally wean it off her.

What is the best kind of riding horses?

Any breed can be a good trail riding horse. An athletic and calm horse with good endurance can be an excellent trail horse.

The most popular competive trail riding breeds are Arabian, Quarter Horse, Paint, Appaloosa and Morgans. Off the track race horses like Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds can be retrained to make nice trail horses. Mustangs, ponies and grades can also be good trail horses.

Some people prefer the gaited breeds for their smooth and comfortable gaits: Tennessee Walker, American Saddlebred, Peruvian Paso, Paso Fino, Tiger Horse and others.

Some horses are better suited to the job of trail horse than other based on temperment and fit with the rider. Ideally a trail horse should be suited to the rider, so really any breed can do the job if the individual horse is suited for it.

Why do Birch trees die suddenly?

They could be hit by disease, an insect borer, or the roots could lose their water source.

Do horses like eating apples and why?

Most of them do, but it really depends on the horse.

One may eat them until there is no more, while another could shun it completely. They also like carrots and, if used very moderately, peppermints. But you should check with your vet before ever feeding a horse anything strange like people food.

Just to improve this answer a little, you can give your horse a apple now and again but it not recommended to give him/her more the 2 a day. Apples as you know contain acid, this could cause problems for the horse in his/her's stomach so its recommended you keep a close eye on how many you or someone else is feeding apples to your a horse.

Are male horses more domminant than females?

As a general rule, most mares get moody when they come in heat. Stallions are also generally as less well-behaved than mares in estrus, mostly because of the fact that their hormones start raging when they smell a female in heat. Geldings on the other hand, are generally the best tempered type of horse out there because they have been castrated and do not have the raging hormone issue going on like mares and stallions do.

However, every horse is different. Some mares will be better than some stallions, some stallions will be better than geldings, and some mares will be better than some geldings. It all depends on how they've been socialized and trained that really depicts how well-tempered they can be.

Why do horses not sleep?

Horses DO sleep!

They just mostly do it standing up!

If you walk up to a horse before sunrise you should make sure to make a bit of noise while approaching, lest you startle it and wake it up on the wrong side of the paddock! (Without even noticing it was asleep!)

Some horses will lie down for a nap... especially in the sun on a cool day, or the the hay of a stable on a cold night!

Is a 1-year-old Yorkshire Terrier a good pet for a 10 year old girl?

That depends, Yorkie terriers are very fragile, energetic, needy dogs. If the girl is dependable and responsible, and likes small dogs, this might be the right dog for her! These dogs can also be selective in companionship, zappy and sometimes a plan old pest. Otherwise, they are delightful dogs!

Hm. This is a very variable question. The girl should be responsible, gentle, and the two should be under good supervision. A Yorkshire is a very fragile animal that could easily be injured by an overexcited child. Young children and delicate animals are not always a good combination. A larger, sturdier dog may be a better decision. Also, a problem arises with young children that irritated, over bothered Yorkies may occasionally be guilty of biting a child. This is a Yorkies natural instinct and some children just don't know when to stop. The child should be fully educated about the dangers of mishandling her pet and perhaps given books (appropriate for her age level) to read about the breed before being given the dog; a surprise would not be a good idea. Giving her the dog, then educating her might be a literally fatal mistake. So but if she knows not to hurt it in any way, and the dog is trained not to bite to much, i think it would be all right

Why horses abort their foals?

Umm... they don't! Do you mean abandon their foals? They don't really do that either! When a horse is about a year old it will be weaned (no longer drinks from its mother.)

Acually horses sometimes do abort there foals they might do it because their not ready or because horses are prey animals and there might be a food sortage or a lot of deaths it the herd. Also horses abandon their foal sometimes to they dont want to look after it or it might have fatal dieses.Well just had to prove that.

Usaqi Haruno

Yes, mares do sometimes abort their foals. If the foal is deformed or sick in the womb, or if the mare is sick or eats poisonous food, or if there is a shortage of food or water, she could abort her foal. If there are twins, or if the foal has lethal white syndrome it could also be aborted.

What do you do when your horse wont stop backing up?

What I do is, when my horse backs up when i want her to stop or go forward I MAKE her back up about half way accross the arena. Everytime she starts to un-wantedly back up I make sure she does, but for how long and when I want her to. Once you have done this, your horse will willingly go forward!! :) Repeate this everytime your horse backs up on her own, and after a while she/he will relyse that everytime she wants to back up and does that your going to make her back up more than she wants to and she will quit! Good Luck

How does a horse use its tail to talk to humans?

A horse can use its tail to communicate with humans in many ways. For example, when a horse is experiencing pain or discomfort, it tucks its tail in tightly. However, a horse with colic may carry its tail at an unnaturally high angle away from its body. A horse swishes its tail from side to side violently when it is annoyed, whilst a particularly irritated animal may even swish it up and down,

When the tail is carried high and the horse is prancing or cantering, it means the horse is in high spirits. General contentment is indicated by a tail in a relaxed state.

How do I tell if my horses are mating?

If you have mares and stallions running together during the breeding season (late spring and summer) there's a pretty fair chance that the mares will get pregnant. Mating is normal behaviour. Loads of people have seen mares being bred and they think that having her tied down and protesting the whole time is normal. This is a sign that something is wrong. A mare that is comfortable with the stallion and ready to mate will stand quietly for service and will not attack him as many people believe.

You can tell when a mare is on heat and ready to breed to within a few days because she shows pretty obvious behavioral signs - looking interested in the stallion, frequent urination, holding her tail up and out, and winking constantly, or turning the flaps of the vulva in and out. When she has access to a stallion she may walk up to him, back up to him, sniff him and give other signs that she is very interested - if she's doing this and you want her in foal to that stallion - leave her there!

How long does it take a horse to eat a round bale?

There is no one answer to that question. It's dependant on too many things, such as the season and weather temperature, the size and eating habits of your horse, as well as how much other grazing or food he or she is getting and if they have unlimited, 24-hour access to the round bale, (which is not recommended) Generally, (and this can vary quite drastically) one round bale of hay will last an average sized horse 5 - 6 weeks. Two horses - about a month or so, Three horses - about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks, etc. *This is assuming that the round bale does not get ruined by rain and the horses urinating and defacating on it, etc.

Are horses scared of mice?

they get scared of snakes.

What are the symptoms to stroke in horses?

Elevated respiration in an inactive horse (normal range is 4 to 16 breaths per minute).

Elevated pulse in an inactive horse, or pulse that does not drop after several minutes or climbs once exercise has stopped.

Profuse sweating or no sweating at all.

Elevated body temperature above 103F.

Irregular heart beat known as 'thumps'.

A depressed attitude.

Dehydration. Test for this by observing your horse's flanks. If they look caved in, he is probably dehydrated. Pick up a pinch of skin along your horse's neck. If the skin snaps back quickly the horse is sufficiently hydrated. If the pinched area collapses slowly the horse is dehydrated.

When riding what safety distance must be between each horse?

Horses are large animals that need plenty of space. They can also be temperamental. When riding, a gap about the length of one horse should be kept between horses. (When riding abreast, the width of one horse should be kept between the riders). Horse's stalls should not be shared - each horse should have its own stall. The stalls should also be large enough that when standing in the middle of the stall, neither of a horse's neighbours can reach it. The horse should have room to turn around and lie down comfortably in the stall. The statement that horses all sleep standing up is a myth - horses can sleep standing up, but many prefer to lie down, and this takes the strain off their joints. Horses need at least an acre of pasture each.

How tall is a horse that is 1 year old?

When I was 4'9, I had a 15hh horse (5 ft tall). You do not want a horse that is extremely short. I'd say if his whithers are below your chin, he's too short. And how tall he is is up to you. Do you mind having to use a mounting block? Are you afraid of heights? Do you like being able to jump on bareback with no assistance? Will you be trail riding without a mounting block handy? These are all questions you should ask yourself to figure out how tall you would like the horse. You could ride a 21hh horse if you wanted to. The question is, do you want to?

I would go with a horse whose whithers were about level with my nose, or no taller than a hand over my head. However, how tall your horse is is all up to you and your preferances.

You walk across a road, you drive a car, you turn on the electricity! Anything could happen!

Are horses scared of certain colours?

Not Necessarily. Depending on what the object/thing is, the could or could not be afraid of it. A horse will most likely be afraid of a plastic bag and dangly objects like that in which make noises or move around crazily in the wind. A horse will not be afraid of many white things just because it is white. Also, horses are partially color blind towards some colors.

Why do horses put their head on your shoulder?

Horses may bump you with their heads to get your attention, show affection, or to let you know they are itchy, hungry, thirsty, or to test your leader ship. It all depends on how they bump you with their head. A strong bump that is more of a slam is likely a test and needs to be dealt with swiftly , otherwise they will see you as submissive and no longer the herd leader. A gentle bump is likely a small request for attention of some kind and can be indulged every so often, just don't give in every time you are bumped or the horse may become spoiled and pushy.
