What is access point?

An network access point is where you can wirelessly or wired (depending on the router) gain access to network capabilities it is connected to (eg. internet, domains, remote desktop). The access point when wireless has a WEP/WPA authentication key to prevent unwanted connectors from gain access to those privileges mentioned. The connection goes from the internet modem, then to router (the access point), then to the device you wish to gain network for (whether wireless or wired)

Why is my dial up internet provider so slow?

Cable Slower than Dialup1)One reason why the cable could be so much slower is that a system that old is probably using an ISA bus and slower serial connections for the modem.

I have a system with about the same specs that I use for testing other systems and various maintence. It is hooked up to a network via a 10mbs NIC and is slightly slower on DSL as brand new computers.

If it is possible, you might want to consider switching from cable to DSL Internet access. It will be faster and will still not tie up your phoneline.

2)With the computer you are using, I suspect it can't handle the bandwidth your Cable Provider is sending. Traditionally, a dial up connection sends data in 'unit' size of 576. (Think of baking, a sifter can only handle 576 units at a time.) Now when you go broadband, the unit size is now 1472 or 1500. Which means the network card you have, is overloaded as soon as you turn on your computer, because the Main board on that type of system, was never designed for broad band connections. ALso, when using a modem, the computer has the capacity to use the smaller demands of it, and broadband places HUGE demands on computer systems. Typically, when you click on Internet Explorer, there are around 10 different things happening all at the same time, which, in turn, makes everything slow. 3)When my ISP, Comcast, released their 3mbps speed increase I learned a valuable lesson about cable Internet. To achieve maximum bandwidth you cannot have more than one (the main) splitter in between your cable modem and the main cable line coming into your house. Just one extra splitter cost me 50% in terms of download speed. Once the splitter was removed my perfomance increased dramatically. Extremely poor performance, such as this example, could have been caused by poor cable signal, other interference, or too many splitters. I've had the best dsl available, and under equal conditions, standard cable beats dsl and dial up every time. 4)Even an older computer, like that 166 MHz Pentium rig, can handle a few megabytes/second worth of Ethernet bandwidth.

Your cable modem relies on some rather advanced electronics and signalling to get its throughput. The protocols it uses to pass messages allow for retrying transmissions over some errors, and for some downshifting in case the signals aren't being sent or received well.

Your cable modem is probably getting a very marginal signal and sending or receiving data very slowly becasue it has to retry transmissions, re-establish its link with the device it is talking to, and frequently retry transmission.

The poor signal can be caused by a lot of different things. Perhaps there are too many devices connected to the same cable, or you have some poor cabling in your house. It might be that the signal arriving at your house is poor, as well. Even if you have a television video signal that's good enough to watch, the cable modem might be only able to transmit or receive a marginal signal.

Trying to fix the issue yourself means learning more about your cable modem and its built in software, or buying (or borrowing) another one to test as a replacement.

But why not have the cable company come back and double-check your signal strength and installation?

5)

Most likely a bad cable modem. Call your cable modem provider and ask for a replacement.

Similarity of internet and world wide web?

A computer network is merely a group of computers connected either through physical connections (wires that connect to a central location called a hub) or wireless radio wave connections. The Internet is global network. A network of networks. All the Internet is is miles and miles of fiber optic cables that span the entire planet, allowing computers from one half of the world to communicate with computers on the other half. The World Wide Web (abbreviated to WWW for simplicity's sake) is the interface of the Internet that formats information in an appealing and good-looking way (this comes in the form of webpages. You are viewing a webpage right now). Your internet browser uses the WWW to let you view information on the Internet. If you were to actually navigate the Internet without the Web, all you would see is a bunch of unintelligable numbers and symbols.

Does anyone own the Internet?

No. Companies and individuals may own pieces of the Internet, such as servers and the connections between them. No single company or organization owns or controls all or even a vast majority of it, though.

Who inivented the Internet?

The idea

The initial idea is credited as being Leonard Kleinrock'safter he published his first paper entitled "Information Flow in Large Communication Nets" on May 31, 1961.

In 1962 J.C.R. Licklider becomes the first Director of IPTO and gave his vision of a galactic network. In addition to the ideas from Licklider and Kleinrock, Robert Taylor helped create the idea of the network, which later became ARPANET.

Initial creation

The Internet as we know it today first started being developed in the late 1960's.

In the summer of 1968, the Network Working Group (NWG) held its first meeting chaired by Elmer Shapiro with the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) with attendees: Steve Carr, Steve Crocker, Jeff Rulifson, and Ron Stoughton. In the meeting the group discussed solving issues related to getting hosts to communicate with each other.

In December 1968, Elmer Shapiro with SRI released a report "A Study of Computer Network Design Parameters." Based on this work and earlier work done by Paul Baran, Thomas Marilland others; Lawrence Roberts and Barry Wessler helped to create the final version of the Interface Message Processor (IMP) specifications. Bolt Beranek and Newman, Inc. (BBN)was later awarded the contract to design and build the IMP sub network.

Introduction of the Internet to the general public

UCLA puts out a press release introducing the public to the Internet on July 3, 1969.

First network equipment

August 29, 1969 the first network switch and the first piece of network equipment called "IMP", which is short for (Interface Message Processor) is sent to UCLA. On September 2, 1969 the first data moves from UCLA host to the switch.

The first distributed message and network crash

On Friday October 29, 1969 at 10:30 p.m., the first Internet message was sent from computer science Professor Leonard KleinRock's laboratory at UCLA, after the second piece of network equipment was installed at SLI. This connection not only enabled the first transmission to be made, but is also considered to be the first Internet backbone.

The first message to be distributed was "LO", which was an attempt at "LOGIN" by Charley S. Kline to log into the SLI computer from UCLA. However, the message was unable to be completed because the SLI system crashed. Shortly after the crash, the issue was resolved and he was able to log into the computer.

E-mail is developed

Ray Tomlinson introduces network e-mail in 1972. The first messaging system to send messages across a network to other users.

TCP is developed

Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn design TCP during 1973 and later publish it with the help of Yogen Dalal and Carl Sunshine in December of 1974 in RFC 675.

First commercial network

A commercial version of ARPANET known as Telenet is introduced in 1974 and considered by many to be the first Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Ethernet is conceived

Bob Metcalfe develops Ethernet idea in 1973.

TCP/IP is created

In 1978 TCP splits into TCP/IP driven by Danny Cohen, David Reed, and John Shoch to support real-time traffic. This allows the creation of UDP. TCP/IP is later standardized into ARPANET in 1983 and is still the primary protocol used for the Internet.

DNS is introduced

Paul Mockapetris and Jon Postel introduce DNS in 1984.

HTML

In 1990 Tim Berners-Lee develops HTML, which made a huge contribution to how we navigate and view the Internet today.

WWW

Tim Berners-Lee introduces WWW to the public on August 6, 1991.

Internet experiences large growth

In 1993 the Internet experienced one of its largest growths and today is accessible and used by people everywhere in the world.

Objective of internet?

It was developed by a company called ARPA which was associated with the US government for Military uses. The original name for the internet as we know now it was ARPANET and it was used by the US Military to communicate resources. I believe that a load of these ex US military bods then setup the wider internet using a basic UNIX shell to comunicate, FTP etc. It was then devolped by the major software houses of Microsoft, Apple etc and became used commercially.

What are Internet characteristics?

Characteristics of the InternetThe characteristics of the Internet that affect its usefulness in teaching and learning can be divided broadly into Information and Connectivity. "The advantages arise from the Internet's enormous capacity to link participants with information and with each other" (Fahy, 2004, p. 164).

The Information and Connectivity of the Internet have unique characteristics:

Information
  • Information on the Internet is multimedia--capable of having coloured images, sound and video. These can be expensive to produce, but increasingly there are open sources of these types of content that are free of charge. Once produced, the price of distribution of the information is nominal compared to that of producing hard-copy books, CDs and films.

One favourite source of free images is Flickr

  • Information on the Internet can be hyperlinked. This permits both teachers and learners to assemble large bodies of information from a wide variety of sources without actually having to store the information in one place; e.g., on paper or a hard disk.

Hyperlinks within information on the Internet enables users to find or cite additional sources of pertinent information.

  • Information on the Internet is searchable. Search engines such as Google enable users to find information on every imaginable topic.
  • Intelligent agents can be programmed to search the Internet for particular information and inform the user of the existence and location of that information. In fact, these agents can harvest pertinent information and deliver it to the user's desktop.
  • Information on the Internet originates from world-wide sources. Users are no longer limited to the library, gallery, museum or video or record store in their locale.
  • Users can visit The Hermitage in St. Petersburg without ever leaving their homes.

ConnectivityProbably the most powerful characteristic of the Internet is its enabling of many-to-many communication. Users can communicate with one another via a variety of methods: synchronous, asynchronous, text, and audio. Most educators, no matter what learning theory or instructional strategy they espouse, recognize the value of communication between and among learners and instructors.

Constructivism and an emerging theory of learning, connectivism, in particular require that learners communicate with one another.

In any case, the willingness of people of all ages to engage in online communication is indicative of its potential for use in learning activities.

Why is the at symbol used in email?

If they are doing it online, it is because there are computer programs capable of adding email addresses to huge spam mail lists, which can be protected against by writing the email address in an unusual way, such as putting the word at in brackets, or just typing it out, or some other method of making the email address different enough from a normal one that a computer program would not be able to recognize it and start sending spam mail to the person's email address.

How do you send a text to a landline phone?

Typically no. But you will see this become available from more service providers in the coming years. The SMS (texting) network has been integrated with land-line numbers in recent years, but except for specialized uses, that has not translated into broad availability of land-line texting. I would suspect that you will start to see more and more Voice-over-IP (VoIP) providers offering this service in the near future, but since a typical land-line phone isn't really equipped for texting, it will be done through an app instead.

How do you stop Skype from automatically updating?

In skype ... Tools > Options > Advanced. In the "When a new verison of skype is available ..." section uncheck the "Automatically download and install it" check box.

If like me your camera stopped working after an update then installing version 4.0.1 (get from web) and unchecking this option will mean your camera will keep working and you won't be forced to go out and buy a webcam that skype is getting a kickback from.

What is a top-level domain?

The top-level domain is the last part of a URL (Uniform Resource Locator, commonly known as a web address) which identifies either the type of url (eg .com, .org) or a country (eg .uk, .ca).

The types of URL include:

.AERO - air transport industry

.BIZ - business

.COM - Commercial or Company

.EDU - US Educational establishment; other countries use .EDU.<country_tld>

.EU - European Union

.GOV - US Government; other countries use .GOV.<country_tld>

.INFO - Information

.NET - Network

.ORG - Non-profit organisation; also under .ORG.<country_tld>

With country top level domains, they are two letter codes which are intended to suggest that the URL relates to some organisation within that country. However with some countries, the two letter code are "impressive" enough to be wanted to be used by those outside the countries as a type; one in particular is that for Tuvalu or .TV which would be something a TV streaming service would be very interested in using when based anywhere in the world.

The .US tld for the United States does exist, but is not very common; fr example where countries use .CO.<country_tld> to indicate a local company, US companies ([almost] exclusively) use .COM even though it can be used by non-US companies.
