What equipment do you need to hook up to the internet?
Hardware for the Internet can be defined as the tangible items needed to allow a user access either by direct connection or through a dial-up connection to a host computer. The first connections involved mainframe computers and telephone line connections. Since then the innovations in computer technology involving the personal computer, ISDN and cable lines to connect to the Internet have allowed for a tremendous increase in users and speed of connections. (On the web page I will include a timeline of the innovations that have greatly impacted the use of the Internet). Since connection speeds are now much faster than in the past, the designers of web pages have many more options available to them in designing their product with video and audio more likely to be used than in the first designed sites.
In researching hardware and its impact on the design of web pages, we have found that the type of hardware directly affects the type of software options one has, and therefore, the design possibilities of a web page. For instance, if one has a scanner, which allows inclusion of documents that are not currently on the computer to be added to a web page, one would also need compatible software to complete the task. In other words, one without the other is not a functional product. Just as a computer is only a box until software is installed, the additional hardware is just a paperweight until it has the correct software that allows for its intended use.
The distinction between software and hardware is sometimes confusing as they are so integrally linked. Clearly, when one purchases a program, they are buying software. But to buy the software, one also buys the disk (hardware) on which the software is recorded. Software is divided into two broad categories. "Systems Software", which includes the "Operating System" and all the "Utilities" that enable the computer to function, and "Application Software", which include programs that do real work for users. For example, word processors, spreadsheets, and database management systems fall under the category of application software. Software that has been written onto read-only memory (ROM) is called "Firmware." Firmware is both a combination of software and hardware.
NIC card, a PC, connection to the internet (cable)??
6 Mbps, or 6 Megabits per second, or 768 Kilobytes per second.
That means every 1 second there are 768 Kilobytes of data transfered.
If You are talking about internet speed, for year 2010 is pretty good speed.
You can download a movie in few hours, song in few seconds...
As of 7/31/2010, average Cable companies provide 4 to 12 mbit connections. However, in reality, you rarely get more than 1/2 of this.
DSL has a slightly higher rate of utilization (60-70%), and are typically sold from 256 kbit to 10mbit, varying wildly. Ultimately, the two are very, very similar in average, but performance differences from location to location based on the company, technology, condition of cable or DSL lines, etc.
Dialup is typically called 56k but this is a different measurement, called 'kilobauds'. A 56k connection at a high rate (48k) can average 9 KB/s or 72kbit.
Most cellular internet lines average 256 kbit.
Most satellite averages 1mbit or less. (Higher is theoretically possible, but not under realistic, sustained usage.)
Verizon FiOS and other FiOS lines average 10 to 40mbit.
First-level fiber optic lines, such as OC1, averages 51mbit. NOT to be confused with T1, which is NOT fiber optic, and averages 1.5mbit. T3 averages 45mbit.
Overall, 6mbit is approximately an 'average' internet connection speed.
it should be noted there is also an 'upload' speed, which is typically MUCH lower than your download.
For example, it's usually a 1:8 ratio for cable. In other words, an 8mbit cable line usually have 1mbit of upload. This is how fast you SEND files, rather than RECEIVE them.
DSL is usually a 1:4 ratio, and a large reason for DSL's continued and growing popularity. It is preferable for businesses or users who send more than they receive.
T1, T3, and OC3 have a 1:1 ratio, uploading and downloading equally.
Dialup is usually a 1:2 ratio. IE, if they receive at 8 KB/s, they send at 4 KB/s. But this is technically lower as the act of sending also uses some of the downstream, and since they are already slow, a large outgoing transfer causes a much bigger bottleneck.
If the upstream is too low to support the downstream, it can also limit the downstream.
Typically, you need 1 mbit of upstream for every 5.5 mbit of downstream. So having 1mbit of up and 12mbit of down is a misnomer: You will be limited to only 5.5mbit of actual downstream. This varies based on the packet size, settings, distance of carrier, and protocol (such as IP, IPS, IPX, UDP, etc.) but is a good general rule. Some cable and DSL companies have come under scrutiny as a result of this indescrepency, as has Verizon for their FiOS service.

What is the difference between websites and sites?
Let's consider an example from Head First CSS and HTMl.Imagine you are the owner of a coffee shop named Starbuzz and because it has grown very popular recently, you want to develop a web site conveying all information related to it. You contact a web-designer, who designs the entire website for you, using a lot of CSS, HTML, PHP and say SQL. Now these files are located inside your computer, which you must transfer to a server computer by FTP (File Transfer Protocol), before they can be accessed by people all over the world. You also require a unique identity, a name, that can be associated only with your website. Say you choose starbuzzcoffee.com. That becomes the domain name of your website. Now you want to expand your website with lots of related web-pages pertaining to, say, business, corporate, employees, etc. So you name those related websites accordingly- business.starbuzzcoffee.com, corporate.starbuzzcoffee.com, employees.starbuzzcoffee.com. Each of these is a website name, that is, they are names around the core- starbuzzcoffee.com, which is the unique domain name, but lots of website names can be created (by you only, of course. The domain name being unique, each website name which contains that as a part of it also becomes yours to name) based on that domain name.

How do you install add-ons in Opera?
The method of installation may depend on the extension. For example, when installing the GNU Aspell extension to use spellcheck in Opera, you load the installer like you would for installing any program. Opera then detects the extension and uses it for checking spellings. Installation of other add-ons may vary. It is a good idea to look for instructions on installing where you got the add-on from.
What is the role of a workstation computer?
In the days of main frame computers, work stations were keyboards and printers, or monitors, which were linked to the Central Processing Unit, which performed all the functions. In other words, when a person typed, each character was sent to the CPU. When smaller computers became available, workstations were given limited storage capacity, so that characters are stored in a memory inside the workstation until the CPU polls the work station to dump its data into a buffer, or holding area, in the CPU. These work stations resembled stand-alone computers, but did not have the ability to run programs. Work stations have disappeared, for the most part, as stand-alone computers have become much less expensive.
Some applications still have the term 'work station', where there is a central computer, called a server, which handles storing and retrieving data, for the stand-alone computers which are linked to it, thus reducing the amount of data stored on each computer. However, desk top computers have become so powerful that it is rare to have a central computer do the processing, with only input and output occurring at the work station.
