The Iroquois Confederacy was a sophisticated political and social system. It united the territories of the five nations in a symbolic longhouse that stretched across the present-day state of New York. The original five nations of the Confederacy were divided into two groups: the Elders, consisting of the Mohawk, the Onondaga, and the Seneca; and the Younger, the Oneida and the Cayuga. Despite this distinction, all decisions of the Confederacy had to be unanimous.

Elm bark was gathered by men in spring or early summer; a vertical knife cut was made and the bark could be peeled off the tree in very large sheets. Often the entire tree would be cut down so that all its bark could be harvested. Fresh bark was always used whenever possible, since it tended to become brittle if stored for any length of time; if kept damp or in a shady spot it remains flexible for a long time.

The Iroquois are matriarchal. The elder women are the head of the family. Homes belong to the women of the tribe as do the children. When a man marries, he joins the wife's family. When a woman divorced, the children remained with the mother.
