When the French came they first met the Huron, a tribe which was a hereditary enemy of the Iroquois. Their name for their enemies was an insulting name meaning "black snakes" or "real adders". The French transliterated this as irinakhoiw which became Iroquois.
An alternate suggestion suggests that the name comes from transliterations and misunderstandings in pronunciation between Basque fishermen, French historians and tribes along the St. Laurence River. In this proposal Iroquois comes from a Basque phrase for "killer people" (hilokoa)
