The Model 37 became the Model 87 when the old Ithaca Gun Company "went under" for the last time and the Ithaca Acquisition Corporation purchased most of its assets in 1987, eventually moving the company to Kings Ferry, NY in the summer of 1989. They completed about 1,000 Model 37's that had been purchased as a "work in progress", but dubbed all new guns as Moel 87's - commemorating the year that the IAC came into being.

I was looking at this model tonight and the owner took the gun apart and turned the small righ around that the spring pushes against.

That S/N puts this firearn close to the antique catagory, it was probably made in 1902. Ithace refered to guns made in this era as their Crass model. The grade (which refers mainly to the quality of the wood and the amount of engraving on the gun) and condition can make a huge difference in the value of the firearm. A high grade gun in excellent condition can eaisly fetch 3 or 4 thousand if you find the right buyer. The value of a worn out field grade gun can approach zero. Damascus barrels can depress the value of a good gun to some extent.

The value of this gun depends on its condition. It ranges from $75 in poor condition up to $350 in excellent condition.

Mine just says Union Firearms . The abbr. Co is not on mine . I can only

assume it is between 1901 and 1903

From 1882 to 1889 they manufactured the first successful slide action repeating shotgun. Designed by Christopher Spencer who also designed the Civil War era Spencer military carbines. You really need to give more information to get a good answer. If this is a double barrel shotgun, sn 272839 is what is called a Flues model invented by Emil Flues, introduced in 1908 and produced through 1926. It was offered in five gauges and 11 different grades and the value of the gun depends on the condition, grade, features, and, to a degree, the gauge. If you want a reasonable estimate of the value, have the gun appraised by a reputable gun smith or Ithaca collector.

A damascus barrel was made by winding thin strips or iron or steel around a mandrel and welding the seams shut. This manufacturing technique was developed prior to the ability to drill holes of the necessary length for gun barrels. Generally speaking all damascus barrel shopguns are quite old and should not be shot unless first inspected by well qualified gunsmith. The corrosive effect of old primers, the ravages of time, and the fact that black powder was hydroscopic could and did play hell with poorly maintained guns.
