Jellyfish

Found in every ocean, jellyfish are not technically "fish." Jellies have an umbrella like structure that allows them to float beautifully in the water. Watch out though, some of them sting!

What does Cnidaria Scyphozoa mean?

coelenterates in which the polyp stage is absent or at least inconspicuous: jellyfishes

Cnidaria is a phylum whose organisms are: radial in symmetry, may have cnidocytes (stinging cells), Diploblastic tissues, no coelomic cavity, two basic types of individuals: polyps (sessile - no capable of moving) and medusas (free floating). Three classes are found in Cnidaria: Hydrazoa, Scyphozoa (ex. Jellyfish), and Anthozoa (ex. corals)

Where do Portuguese Jellyfish live?

the portuguese man-of-war lives in the warm parts of all oceans and have been strongly found in costa rica and in hawaii.

What causes Leigh syndrome?

Leigh syndrome is primarily caused by genetic mutations that interfere with the functions of mitochondria, leading to impaired energy production. These mutations can be inherited or can occur spontaneously. As a result, affected individuals experience progressive neurological deterioration and other complications.

How long do the Portuguese man-of-war live?

The Man-O-War jellyfish love small fish like krill, clownfish and bait ECT...

Why does Santiago hate the Portuguese man-of-war?

Santiago hates the jellyfish because they attach their stinging tentacles to his lines, so when he pulls them up he ends up with sore and blistering hands from the jellyfish's poison. There's supposed to be a second less discreet answer, but I'm not too sure what it is.

Why isn't a jellyfish a fish?

Jellifish and fish are animals evolved from different ancestors. While jellifish belong to phylum Cnidaria and have a radial simmetry, fishes are vertebrate, have bilateral simmetry and belong to phylum Chordata, having a notochord, a complete digestive system and a neural cord.

What are the characteristics of a man of war?

Man of wars (Physalia physalis) are very unique jellyfish. They are, along with other members of the order, Siphonophora, a colony of specialized, yet integrated individuals called zooids. Unlike a colony of bees, ants, or even corals, these colonial individuals are too interdependent to survive alone, but it is fascinating that they begin life as individuals before they differentiate into to one of four types of zooids that synergistically make up a man of war colonial individual (called a zoon). Each zooid contributes to one of four functions- movement, catching prey, feeding, or breeding.

What is the average size and height of an box jellyfish?

It's weight is up to 4.4 lbs. and it's size is 1-2 ft.

Why are the box jellyfish dangerous?

All jellyfish, as far as I know, have nematocysts (stinging cells) on their tendrils. These release neurotoxins into the victim as they wrap the tendrils around it. These neurotoxins can cause intense pain and spinal/neural (brain/nerves) damage.

Does a lion's mane jellyfish care for its young once they are born?

No, lion's mane jellyfish do not give birth during sexual reproduction. Conception is even outside of the the adult bodies. A male adult jelly releases sperm cells into the water column, usually near a female adult that likewise releases her egg cells into the water column. The parents, after this release of haploid (single chromosome) gametes, are no longer involved in the fertilization process. A male and a female gamete then haphazardly unite at the whim of currents, tides, and other physical forces that happen to allow contact between them.
The resulting fusion is a diploid (two chromosome) single cell zygote that within hours differentiates into a multi-cellular planula. The planula is a free swimming, flattened, and cilliated jellyfish larval form that swims to the marine floor and then crawls until it finds a suitable fixed object. The planula then develops into a sessile (attached) polyp form, which asexually buds off many medusas (free swimming umbrella shaped jellies). The juvenile ephyra completes its life cycle when it matures and sexually reproduces as an adult male or female lion's mane jellyfish.

What type of jelly are jellyfish?

Err, they are not jelly. They are sea creatures. Jelly is an artificial food product invented by man.

What is a bluebottle jellyfish?

Bluebottle jellyfish, or portuguese man o'war is not a jellyfish, but a colony of many siphonophora polyps.

Each polyp is a single animal in the polypoid stadium (not medusoid), specialized in particular functions, and all together are joint to make a unique "body": the colony. The floating part is a polyp full of gas, called siphonophore; the "eating" part are polyps called gastrozoids; the stingy tentacles are the dactylozoids; while the reproductive sistem is provided by gonozoids.

The bluebottle jelly (Physalia utriculus) is a different species than the Portuguese man of war (Physalia physalis). P. physalis is the only widely distributed species. P. utriculus, on the other hand, occurs in the Pacific and Indian oceans. P. physalis have much larger air bladders (pneumatophores) of up to 14 inches (35cm) than P. utriculus, which only measure up to 4 inches (10cm) in length. The real distinction between the two is that the man of war has many long tentacles, but the bluebottle only has one extremely long tentacle.

In other words, if you find a Physalia washed up on a Florida beach, you know that it is a Portuguese man of war. However, if you find one on an Australian beach that is smaller than your hand, with one extremely long, blue tentacle, you can call that one a bluebottle.

The Portuguese man of war is a misnomer to start with. Only the English built 'man of war' ships, a design that they based on the earlier Portuguese built 'caravel' fighting ships. But hey, the name stuck (except in Portugal, where they are called caravela portuguesa).

What is the biggest jellyfish?

lion's mane is the biggest jellyfish

The arctic lions mane. But I have heard that one species can have a diameter of eight feet around and the tentacles can be the size of half of a football field. It may be that kind.
