Why you would want to be a security officer?

I'm a sergeant with Campus Safety at a midsized university (about 20 in our department, depending on how many of our guys are on disciplinary suspension for committing various acts of goonery while on duty). I will attempt to answer your question. There are benefits and drawbacks to being a security officer. One benefit is that you serve a private employer, rather than the taxpayer. As such you are not expected to be objective and you can get away with a lot of stuff that a sworn cop can't. Because you're not a sworn cop, there is not a whole lot of accountability, provided no one catches you doing something illegal on videotape. Your department is nearly autonomous, mostly free from outside scrutiny. If you don't feel like doing paperwork, throw it away. One of the nicer benefits is that depending on your uniform and the amount of equipment you're authorized to carry (we have radios with lapel mics, asp batons, cuffs, OC spray, plastic gloves, customized badges, pretty much everything a sworn cop has except for the gun) you might resemble a real cop. People will often make that mistake.

Another benefit is that as most of your colleagues will be severely undereducated and underskilled (hence why they are willing to work overnights for $8.50 an hour). You will be the big fish in their pond. They will come to you with spelling problems and requests for help with navigating that ever-so-tricky internet. You will be their hero and the go-to guy for that kind of stuff. One drawback is that you are not a cop. Your power over another person is basically the same as that of a regular citizen (the arrests you make, if ever, will only be citizen's arrests). People who are aware of this will make fun of you and there's not much you can do about it other than call the real police, who will also either make fun of you or ignore you completely.

When you have built rapport and a cooperative relationship with a customer?

This is you chance to tell the interviewer what your strengths in dealing with customers. You need to find an example of where you gave great service, explain what you did (eg I listened carefully to what the customer wanted) and what happened as a result.

Make sure you have your answer ready before you go for the interview. It should be truthful - so there is no point in saying you are a great communicator if you sit and mumble your way through the interview. Some good strengths for most jobs would be

  • ability to work as part of a team
  • like to get a job completed
  • great with customers - like dealing with the public
  • good interpersonal skills

This is a question that you will want to be well prepared for before the interview. You want to answer confidently and not stumble to find something to say. Highlight what experience and personal qualities you have that relates to the position. If you are applying for a childcare job, you could mention education you have relating to children and teaching, personal qualities of patience and understanding, loving firmness and consistency in behavior expectations, etc. If you are applying for a position as an accountant, you could briefly state the degrees you have in the field, but focus on positions you have successfully held along with accomplishments in those positions, etc. Just be sure whatever your answer is, it relates to the position you are applying for and try to make yourself stand out from the other candidates.

"Those who can, do; those who can't, teach."

That is an old, old mindset; one that's been around for decades! Actually, people become teachers for many reasons. Some might become teachers because they think it's an easy way to make a living and to have their summers free. Oh, and let's not forget the time off at Christmas. Those are the minority.

The majority of people who become teachers do so because they enjoy sharing knowledge and teaching what they know to others. When interviewing for a teaching position, that would be the ideal answer.

How do you answer 'What are your expectations from this job' in an interview?

Before your interview, first think carefully about yourself and your career. Sketch out your life story. Work it out in your head, write it out, and say it out loud to friends and family members -- as many times as necessary until it becomes clear and concise. It should come out as a logical progression. Your decisions should make sense. If you've made mistaken decisions in the past, that's OK. Don't hide from them. But make sure your current career decision -- to get the job you're after now -- makes perfect sense. This introspection is critically important. Once you've done, you'll be ready for questions like this.

What makes a good company?

Room for advancement is another common consideration, people like to grow with a company they work with. A safe work environment is another common consideration.
