In 1796, Adams was elected President and Jefferson was elected Vice-President, even though they belonged to different political parties. In 1800, Jefferson was elected President and Adams was badly defeated. Adams tried to pack the Judicial Branch (courts) with judges who thought the same way he did. Jefferson got angry.

Later, when they had both retired from politics, they began writing letters to each other and worked things out. Both men died on the same day, July 4, 1826, exactly 50 years after they signed the Declaration of Independence.

John Adams spent most of his early life growing up in Braintree, Massachusetts. After being appointed to Congress he spend most of his time with his colleagues in Philadelphia. Most of Adams' adult life was spent in Europe while he was working on commissions for the Congress and working towards the goal of gaining American independence. He lived in Paris, Passy, Versailles and Auteuil France. He also spent a few years in the Netherlands mainly in Leyden, the Hague and Amsterdam. He and his family also lived in London for a while. After he then moved back to the states and lived in New York and then died while residing in Quincy, Massachusetts.

For much of the war he was in France. With the help of Franklin he got the French government to loan money, provide troops, and send the French Navy. It was the French navy that helped at Yorktown by keeping the British man of war off the coast so Washington could defeat the British army. After the war Adams and John Jay helped write the peace treaty with the British.

They were controversial because states had the right to judge when the federal government had passed an unconstitutional law because the Alien and Sedition Acts were unfair and unconstitutional.
