Did Joseph Stalin have paranoia?

No he did not. It was more of an increasing fear that he had inside him, which became more evident in his actions against his political enemies, those within his party & common civilians which made it increasingly difficult for those around him and therefore labeled paranoid. His paranoia was therefor a result of his increasing fear of usurpation.

Contrary view:

Yes, he definitely was paranoid. He eliminated ally after ally fearing they were disloyal to him. He got rid of several leaders of the secret police, several prestigious generals and many high ranking Politburo members. The number two man in Russia before, during and for a time, after World War 2 was Lavar Kaganov. He was known as the Wolf of the Kremlin. In a biography about Kaganov, titled "The Wolf of the Kremlin," by Stuart Kahan, 1987, the following mentions of Stalin's paranoia were made:

"Paranoia ha already become a part of his daily routine, as integrala part of him as breathing." p. 25.

"It seemed to Lazar that whatever paranoia Stalin had before the war was gone." p.208.

"Lazar loved to play with the paranoia switches in Stalin. . . " p. 244.

"Besides which, Stalin's paranoia was deepening." p. 253.

"Stalin's condition continually worsened. Paranoia had reached its apex." p.263

"...Stalin, suffering from a full blown persecution complex..." p. 269

Granted, Stalin never laid on a psychiatrist's couch and was formally diagnosed with paranoia as a mental condition, but his fear of close associates turning on him was more than just fear. It was outright paranoia, because his fears were baseless.

When did the Cold War start?

The beginning of the Cold War could be traced back to Churchill's use of the term "Iron Curtain", on 3 May 1946. This came to symbolise the beginning of the Cold War because it was the period marked by political tension and military rivalry, stopping just short of escalating into full-scale war, between the West as represented by the USA, and the East headed by the Soviet Union.

However, the Cold War did not have an "official" start date with a single day in mind. Some historians feel it began at the end of World War II, in late 1945, when Josef Stalin of the USSR refused to let the Eastern European nations go after the war. The US, Britain and France demanded the nations be allowed to chose their own types of government. Stalin was not going to let that happen, and his actions escalated the arms race of the Cold War.

The Cold War could really only truly be seen to have ended with the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of the two Germanys - one symbolising the East and the other symbolising the West - in 1990. Shortly after this, many Russian states began to break free, seeking independence from Russia.

Did Joseph Stalin win World War 2?

The broken troops in 1941, were replaced by new soldiers willing to defend the motherland. While Hitler poured more of his reserves into the battle, Stalin just scratched the surface of his reserves. After the battle of Stalingrad, over 91,000 of Hitler's were captured and there supply line was cut. The red army pushed Nazi forces back to Berlin in 1945. In the battle of Berlin, the Red Army took control of Berlin, Germany's capital

Why did children report their parents to the secret police?

Under Bolshevik led Russia, children who reported their parents were rewarded as heroes of the state and given rewards. Sometimes, in the years of state imposed famine, children would denounce their parents for food either because it was given to them by the government or because, with the parents now gone, they could do what they wanted to do.

After the October Revolution when Lenin and the Bolsheviks took control of Russia, they placed emphasis on the importance of the state and practically destroyed the concept of family. They felt that family members who had allegiance to one another did not have the proper allegiance to the state. Children were encouraged to denounce their parents for any inkling of counter-revolutionary thought.

Why didn't Stalin want people to leave Russia causing him to put up the Iron Curtain?

The Iron Curtain was a rhetorical device in a Churchill speech. He said, "From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent." By this he meant that no one could leave the countries that were to the east of that line.

There wasn't actually a huge metal curtain between the West and East.

Stalin didn't want anyone to leave the Soviet Union because he knew everyone would leave. He knew communism is not a popular system of government.
