the fuel pump for the 2001 Rio is located in the tank, you have to drop the fuel tank to remove the pump, make sure that all connecting electrical and fuel, lines are disconnected before you completely remove the tank from the frame of the vehicle. there are steel straps that hold the tank in place and can be loosened with a socket wrench.. Follow these steps.
- disconnect the battery cables as electricity powers the pump so you do not want sparks and gas to mix very bad!!!
- slowly remove tank straps as tank begins to lower, you will see the pump assembly with hoses and electrical wiring disconnect be careful not to pull or push too hard as you can snap connections off.
- once tank is on ground you can tap the fuel Assembly lock off in a counter clock wise motion... the lock is a giant washer which is made of steel and keeps the pump from falling in the tank... use a flat screwdriver and hammer to tap the lock off.. do not hit too hard soft, continuous taps.
- once the fuel assembly is free you can do what u like ...
- reverse the process to install the pump

Open the trunk. Locate where the back of the light is. You will see 3 or 4 black plastic wingnuts holding the trunk lining on. Remove those. Carefully peel the trunk lining to reveal the back of the light and 3 or 4 more wing nuts. Remove the wing nuts. The entire tail light assembly will now be removable from the car. Be careful because it is still attached to the car by the wires leading to the lights. You will see that 4 clips attaching the circuit board (the thing that has the wire attached to it) to the tail light assembly. Undo the clips and pull out the circuit board. On the reverse side you will see the light sockets. Locate the bad bulb and replace. The bulb number is on the base of the bulb. If the bulbs all appear to be good be warned that Malibus are notorious for the tail light circuit board going bad. This may have to be replaced.

My break lights also went out on my 07 Kia Rio. After check all the fuses and bulbs I checked the switch that was located on the top part of the break peddle. It looks like a little black box with a push rod coming out of it. Take out that box and then attach the two wires that connected to that box together. This will bypass the box and let you know if the box is in fact out. If the lights come on then replace the unit at your local kia dealership. I paid about $20 for mine. If they don't come on I would take it down to your local shop to have them trouble shoot it. Good luck.
