I took my thumbnail just above the page back, forward buttons, thence, I took a small straight blade screw driver and gently pried around the perimiter. Came right off.

I was having the five way controller issue not working, and,,,, guess what I found!!

Three loose screws, charging the cell and looking forward to the shadetree repair.

Amazon said throw it out, and purchase a new one!!

It is a good device to have if you are a dedicated reader. But if you are willling to invest some more money and upgrade it put it to the iPad so you aren't restricted to simply reading book. The iPad let's you do much more. Either way the kindle is sleek, portable, modern, and convenient and doesn't much damage to the wallet.
