What is productivity bargaining?
A form of collective bargaining leading to a productivity agreement in which management offers a pay raise in exchange for alterations to employee working practices designed to increase productivity
Productivity bargaining has been described as "an agreement in which advantages of one kind or another, such as higher wages or increased leisure, are given to workers in return for agreement on their part to accept changes in working practices or in methods or in organization of work which will lead to more efficient working. The changes in the interests of efficiency are seen as an integral part of the bargaining and as necessary contribution to meeting the cost of advantages conceded to the workers."
The prime purpose of productivity bargaining is to raise labour productivity and lower unit labour costs, and this is achieved by the exchange of alternations in working practices for increased leisure, higher remuneration for labour, more comprehensive fringe benefits, and general increase in the status of manual employees. Moreover, it is an exercise in problem solving and creating new gains, rather than just power bargaining over shares.
Productivity bargaining is a complex process. It involves lengthy, detailed negotiations about the implementation of a variety of management techniques such as work study and job evaluation. The content of negotiations is more or less comprehensive in the sense that it includes not only bargaining over earnings but bargaining over other related matters such as reductions in hours, introduction or extension of shift working, manning of machines, demarcation lines, the introduction of new payment system, and re-allocation of job control. In addition, the coverage of productivity bargaining is more or less comprehensive in that generally speaking it will aply to all employees in an enterprise. Productivity bargaining generally occurs at the level of the enterprise or company.

What can an employee do to prove that they did not quit their job?
Proving ANY negative thing is difficult. It's a "he said, she said" thing and the only remedies are; any paperwork available to prove your case (which the employer controls): eyewitness accounts from fellow workers (who may be coerced into silence for fear of their job) and maybe customers or other non-employee people who know the situation. Also if there is a history of similar "quits vs discharges", that maybe the unemployment office has a record of (but can't disclose it to you due to privacy laws). One can always sue (hiring an attorney), but that's not practical, either. If you have to accept the "quitting" account, check to see what reasons your state has for justifiably quitting (there are several, in various states), and file your claim on THAT basis. <><>
You let the rumor die down and let people think what they want. You know the truth and that's all that matters.
You gather as much information and facts about the issue that you can (documents (even though controlled by the employer); witnesses (who aren't intimidated by management); performance reports; etc.) because it could affect getting unemployment benefits and therefore is worth more than "that you know the truth and that's all that matters"

What did companies do to stop labor unions?
Some of the things that companies did to stop labor unions was use scabs. Scabs were people that replaced the people in the labor unions on the job. The people in the labor unions would then be lose their job and have trouble feeding their families. Companies would also use black listing which was when companies would tell other companies of people who were involved in labor unions. Then the people who were black listed were not able to get jobs in the area, and would then be forced to move.
They also hired private security companies to harass union members. Some used their connections with the government to have troops come in and use superior force to breakup strikes.

History has shown workers that unions ca gain nothing employers cannot give. Unions cannot prevent massive job losses and layoffs.
Unions cannot get pay and benefit raises from broke employers.
Unions cannot afford to pursue every grievance to arbitration, so they ditch the weak cases ... and most grievances are weak. So members get pizzed.
Unions have helped COngress and state legislatures incorporate into LAW many things unions used to get by negotiation in contracts ... so there is little unions can offer non-union employees.

Labor Union is a formal or informal group of workers?
Most Labor Unions are a formal group of workers.
Labor Unions were set up in the US to protect the work of the then only free workers, being whites. This was during the time that slavery would be abolished and approximately 20 million formerly enslaved blacks (forgive me if this is not accurate I am European) would join US' labourforce thereby effectively though not purposely endangering the work positions of all the white people already at work.
The threat lay in the fact that the formerly enslaved blacks had been doing hard work for a long time while not being paid. After a time you get specialized in your skill whatever it is. White people had never had to work as hard and were always paid. If these labour-forces would join the working-market and in not knowing how to demand for (more or adequate) pay/money (possibly, I am not certain) they would be a very cheap force. So the unions formed to make sure only certain people (e.g. white people) could work in certain places.
Side note: one of the best things that came out of the segregation was that black people could only invest in black owned establishments. Thus keeping this community alive, maybe something to keep in mind for the way things are today...
