1.Check your AC adapter. Your battery may be dead and your AC adapter may have come loose at one of two points. Make sure the adapter is properly and snugly plugged into the back of your laptop. Check the wall socket or surge protector where your adapter is plugged in. Make sure this connection is secure, and consider trying another wall socket in case the current socket is blown.

2. Consider your laptop battery. Your laptop LCD screen may be dark because the battery has deteriorated and can no longer hold a charge. Average laptop batteries last for 1,000 charges, after which point they start to go bad. Check the battery indicator light on your laptop (usually on the side or bottom) to see if the machine is receiving any power. If not, the battery needs to be replaced.3. Check your monitor brightness settings. This may explain why your laptop LCD screen is dark or unresponsive. At times, the monitor brightness settings have been accidentally turned all the way down, resulting in a dark screen. You can turn these settings back up via the brightness keys above the numeric keys on most laptops. 4. Check the LCD closed switch on your laptop. This switch acts as a sensor that is located right by the monitor hinges. Sometimes this switch gets stuck in the "closed" position, resulting in a dark screen even when the laptop is opened. Tap this switch a few times to jolt it back into the open position. The back-light on your screen should come back on. 5. Hook your laptop up to an external monitor as a test. This test will allow you to determine whether the fault lies with your display itself or with the motherboard. Find an external monitor and use a VGA cable to make the connection between the laptop and this monitor. Power on both the laptop and the external monitor and see if an image appears on the external monitor. If no image appears, your motherboard likely needs to be replaced, which is an expensive proposition. If the external monitor does display your laptop's desktop/information, however, the fault lies with the LCD screen itself and this needs to be replaced.

I cannot (easily) find extra memory cards the mine will run - due to the limited capacity and speed (only two DDR2 clock speeds are supported.

I have compared them side by side and can honestly say they are nearly exactly the same. The HP laptop has a higher review than the toshiba but the HP as to many preloaded program built in (which isn't all bad but people do not like preloaded programs like me).

The performance on both laptops are the same, so its just the question of how does the laptop feel. I mean by using the mouse, keyboard, if it feels plastic or soild etc. You will have to test both laptops for that one.

It depends on the configuration of the Laptop (and also the version of Adobe Photoshop) you are using. If the processor is Dual Core or C2D, with 2+ GB of RAM, then it should be fine to run Photoshop CS2. Anyway, Photoshop and other multimedia tools are processor & memory intensive programs, and also run a lot of background processes so the system should be a bit slower.
