How is synthetic leather made?

Blended leather is a material that contains ground, pulverized, shredded reconstituted or bonded leather and is not wholly the hide of an animal and should not be represented as 100% leather. It is typically combined with Polyurethane and some kind of cotton or poly/cotton blend. It looks and feels like leather, is quite durable, cleans easily and is somewhat fade- resistant due to sunlight exposure.

What is the difference between cowhide and horsehide?

Cowhide is the default utility leather today, used for articles that need to last and take plenty of wear - jackets, luggage, etc. Specialty uses include horse tack, gun holsters, and baseballs and gloves.

Horsehide was formerly a utility leather, but it is now far too costly. Today, few horses are used for farming and it's illegal to raise them for meat. Their hides have become very hard to source, and most tanneries will no longer handle them.

Their characteristics are very similar. Horsehide generally is finer grained than cowhide and takes on a little more pleasing luster with use. However, horse can be stiffer and take longer to break in than cow, and some find it less durable.

What is the average cost per square foot for carpet?

WikiAnswers Responses:

There is no one price, & no one quality, could be junk for about a buck or premium stuff for $6-10 or more a foot. Here's a good rule of thumb, assuming you shop for value and don't over pay.

Expect 5 years of good service for every $1 you spend on carpet, (not pad or labor) per foot.

$1 buck/ sq /ft= 5 years of good service

$2 buck Sq/ Ft= 10 years & so on..

So much depends on the quality of the carpet. The price can vary from a pound or less per sq ft to many pounds, even dozens of pounds.

How much a foot for carpet

Mark Twain said that "One foot on fire & one foot on ice & on AVERAGE your pretty comfortable" I share his view that average is a pretty illusionary tool when it comes to being really useful.

Most stores offer free estimates so what does that cost you to have someone put an actual product with an actual quote.. you can always say no thanks.

$20 per yard = 2.22 per sq foot.

How do you take wrinkles out of leather jackets?

Here's some useful info from a leather coat site: "A wrinkled garment can be hung in the bathroom while you shower. If the wrinkles don't steam out by themselves, gently iron the garment at a warm setting after layering clean brown paper between the iron and the leather. Store your leather garment in a well-ventilated area and cover with a cloth to keep it dust free. Avoid storing your leather garment in plastic. Leather is porous and it needs to "breathe"." How durable is bonded leather?

Well if your asking this question then you`re probably aware that it is made up of various grinded leather scraps. I went to a place called Surplus Freight and am purchasing a leather set that feels very nice to the touch. The color is deep and not so shiny as other leathers but it was quite nice. $1248.99 for the sofa and loveseat with 2 end tables and a coffee table. I know that you usually get what you pay for but I am receiving a life time warranty that will cover stains, scratches, cuts, etc. I will write back to let you know what happens,

Adding to this answer - I bought a "bonded leather" sofa loveseat & chair from Levitz about 10 years ago & also got a really good warranty. I didn't understand that this wasn't leather - it's just fabric, a little bit of ground up leather fiber (not much) and a covering of plastic that is stamped to look like leather.

It's just now starting to have the plastic coating wear off on the front seat seams and looks pretty cheesy - it did last for 10 years though. Levitz has since gone out of business - so much for my warranty.

Next time I will bite the bullet and buy leather - it really does last and is a better investment.

Not certain what you bought 10 yrs ago was "bonded" leather, as bonded leather has only been on the market since 2007/2008.

How do you get body odor out of a leather couch?

This answer is from a professional regarding leather couches: I would suggest purchasing a deodorizer which uses enzymes to destroy smells caused by body odor and other materials. It does this by consuming the matter which causes the smell. This will give your furniture and upholstery a pleasant scent.

More Suggestions:

I would try Fabreeze. I use it on my cloth couch, carpets, dog bed, clothes closets and rooms. Works like magic.

You should take a damp cloth with liquid Zero laundry detergent to wipe down the leather, and then use a soft large towel to dry off every week (especially in the hot weather when people have sun lotion on, are in shorts, etc. because body oils will penetrate the leather).

Always test what you are spraying onto your couch by putting a little on at the back of the couch near the floor! Apply it to a very small area to be sure it doesn't damage the leather!

Can you recycle leather?

I've heard of "vegetable-tanned leather" which is supposed to be easier to recycle because it is chromium-free, but have found no explanation of how it would actually be recycled.

It seems that at the least it could be reused. That process would still leave scraps... I guess the big question would be: Can leather actually be broken down into smaller components and then reassembled?
