A Romaine-like lettuce appeared in Egyptian tomb paintings that date back to 4500 B.C. Romaine eventually made its way to the Middle East and to the Mediterranean. Romaine was in common use on the Greek island of Kos, from which it gets its British name. In ancient Rome, Romaine lettuce was eaten both cooked and raw, and was a common part of the Roman diet. The Romans called it Cappadocian lettuce, and believed in its healthful and medicinal properties. According to Pliny, the emperor Augustus Caesar erected a statue to honor its healing abilities after being cured of a serious illness. Lettuce juice was used as a medicine by many ancient herbalists.

The name Romaine dates from the time when the Popes moved from Rome to Avignon in the 14th century, bringing this type of lettuce with them and having it grown in the palace gardens. Light-green, dark-green, and red-spotted forms of Romaine were described in 1623. The type was common in Italy in the Middle Ages and is said to have been taken to France from Italy in 1537 by Rabelais. Toward the end of the 16th century it was still rarely grown in France and Germany.

For much of the 20th century, Romaine wasn't known at all to many Americans. That's because of the overwhelming success of iceberg lettuce, which can withstand days if not weeks of shipping. As late as the mid-1970s, iceberg lettuce accounted for more than 95% of all of the lettuce grown in this country. Then along came the reborn Caesar salad. Invented in a Tijuana restaurant in the 1920s, for decades the Caesar salad was known as a California specialty. In the late 1970s the Ceasar salad was "discovered" by the fast food industry, and there followed a couple of decades of popularity.

The top Romaine lettuce producing countries are China, United States, Spain, Italy and India. In the United States, California produces about 75% of the Romaine lettuce. The second top producing state is Arizona which accounts for another 19%.

A terrible taste

All animals are consumers, not producers. Only plants and certain one-celled organisms are producers.

Water lettuce does bear flowers, but they are usually hidden down deep under the leaves. Water Lettuce is a floating plant from Tropical America, and although it grows in water, it does not like water on its leaves.

The bread (it varies based on type, size, brand, ect.) is probably, assuming you have 2 slices, between 150 and 200 calories, and the lettuce is 30 calories. So the sandwich in general is probably about 180 to 230 calories or so.

In most cases, a small amount of mold will not cause any illness and might actually be good for your digestive tract. Mold after all is what yogurt and many other daily foods is the building block for. However, in some cases mold may be harmful depending on the type of bold, bacteria or fungus is associated with. This can all be dependent upon what type of food or substance the mold is growing on, how and where the substance was stored and possibly even a few other factors. If you have the means to extra lettuce, throw out the moldy lettuce however there is only an extremely small chance that anything would come out of consuming moldy lettuce. It most likely will not be a pleasure to eat as a side note.

Bearded dragons will mostly eat any leafy greens. Although dragons can eat leafy lettuces, they consist of mostly water and hold no nutritional value. More healthy staples should be fed such as endive, collards, mustard greens, turnip greens, etc.

it is when the lettuce is bolting in the heat. It gets bitter. you gotta cut that part off and dunk it in cold water for a few min and then dry really well and put in your frige for a few days. if your fridge is not cold enough, turn the temp up. But if you just find it you can rinse it off and you can let it sit in the cool fridge. it is when the luttace becomes bitter and you can wash it well and dry well and set it in the fridge a few days to sweeten back up. Lettuces are mostly made up of water, so watering them is VERY important, but they also hold water for a while, so watering them about once or twice a month(if they are looking dry, this is not what it seems, unless they grow little seedy like bits on the ends of a stalk)

You would be surprised how much water lettuces seem to hold even if you don't water them regularly! Oh and also don't overwater, it can ruin the growth process!

yes, but only raw. you can also give gerbils carrot, grapes, apple, pear, cabbage, lettuce, any type of berry (not wild), banana ect. (all raw, you cant give them cooked food)

Lettuce is primarily water. As such it freezes at just below the freezing temperature for water, or at about 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

i don't think so they have another diet! Tadpoles eat algae and other water plants. Lettuce has little nutritional value. Try a variety of leafy vegetables like spinach, watercress and collard greens if you are unable to obtain aquatic aquarium plants.
