Steve Jobs started NeXT when he left Apple in 1985. The purchase of NeXT also brought Steve Jobs back to Apple; initially as a consultant and becoming CEO in 2000.

Very few Vivitar cameras come with Mac OS X support the software is often for Windows computers. Try connecting the camera to the Mac with the USB cable, turn the camera on, and see if iPhoto or the Image Capture application recognises it. If folders are moving on the Desktop it is probably because the View settings are set to keep them ordered in a particular way. For example if they are ordered by Date Created (or Modified) then when you add a new file or folder to the desktop the others will be moved to make way for it. This can be changed from the Finder's View menu Show View Options.

Similarly in an individual Finder window right click on some blank space and select the Arrange By option to specify how you want your files and folders ordered.

Open iPhoto.

Insert the Photo Disk.

iPhoto will see the disk and ask if you want to import all or selected photos.

Open the Finder.

Insert the Photo Disk.

Open the Photo Disk and find the photos you want to import.

Create a folder or folders on the laptop.

Drag or copy/past the photos to the locations you wish.

Eject the disk.

The iPhoto app and the Preview app can show the photos.
