What were Martin Luther's beliefs about our relationship with God?

Martin Luther shared with all evangelical Christians the belief that man's relationship with God has been broken by sin. The reality of sin -- the violation of God's commandments, together with an innate proclivity toward rebellion against His will -- means that man is separated from his Maker and that this separation is, from man's perspective, permanent and irreparable. But Luther came to understand that, from God's perspective, salvation from sin and its consequences and penalties, plus the restoration of relationship, is possible. Luther learned that God is all-powerful as well as loving, merciful and kind, so God was both willing and able to bring this salvation and restored relationship. But God is also perfectly holy and just, so the penalty for sin must be paid. The penalty for sin against the eternal God is eternal death, or separation from God and His goodness forever as well as the experience of never-ending turmoil and agony. Luther recognized that here was a dilemma. How does an infinitely holy and perfectly just God properly punish sin and yet show mercy to the sinner through forgiveness? And how can a hopelessly sinful and rebellious man become right with God? The answer is that God came to earth in the form of the man, Jesus, lived a perfect and sinless life and then offered Himself to death as a sacrifice to pay for man's sin. With the death of Jesus as payment for the sins of mankind, and with His resurrection as the promise of eternal life beyond the grave, man could regain his lost relationship with his Creator and, through Christ, now his heavenly Father. Luther learned and then taught that this salvation and restored relationship, together with a new power to resist and overcome sin, could not be gained through any religious efforts on the part of sinful man, but only through faith, trust and confident belief in the love and mercy of God as revealed in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

True or false Martin Luther belived that humans gain salvation through faith and good works?

False.

Martin Luther believed that humans gain salvation through grace alone. He believed there was nothing anyone could do to make them worthy of salvation, but that it was only through God's grace and mercy that anyone could be saved. This did not mean, however, that faith and good works were to be ignored, but rather that they could not buy salvation.

John Wycliffe was dissident Catholic back in the 14th century, he translated that Bible into English and, in general, wrote against the Catholic Church. Martin Luther was a dissident in the 16th century who left the Catholic Church as a heretic and apostate and translated the Bible into German.

What practices of the catholic church did Luther consider to be corrupt?

Not so much corrupt. Luther took out a few books in the bible that referenced purgatory because he didn't agree with it. Also, Catholicism only believes that the Eucharist (mass, when Jesus said "take this bread and eat of it, for it is my body, which will be given up for you") is real, while all protestant religions believe it was only a symbol.

What does the 95 theses that Martin Luther wrote mean in English?

The 95 Theses were mostly concerned with the Pope, forgiveness, indulgences, and such like. Many of them are orthodox Catholic dogma - and were at that time, which makes them so mystifying. A few of them are totally off the wall, like, "what is he talking about?" My personal take is that he was complaining about what other theologians in Germany at that time may have been saying, which doesn't give him anymore credibility as he then has no reason to be addressing the Holy Father in this manner. Either way, they are definitely NOT some kind of "protestant manifesto". In them Martin Luther definitely supports indulgences, confession, etc. and appeals to the Holy Father to put things right as it is his duty and right.

Answer:

Actually Martin Luther was definitely against indulgences and confession.

Here are some examples from the 95 theses (in modern English):

2 - Only God can give salvation - not a priest.

6 - Only God can forgive -the pope can only reassure people that God will do this.

21 - An indulgence will not save a man

22 - A dead soul cannot be saved by an indulgence.

32 - People who believe that indulgences will let them live in salvation will always be damned - along with those who teach it.

33 - Do not believe those who say that a papal indulgence is a wonderful gift which allows salvation.

75 - It is wrong to think that papal pardons have the power to absolve all sin.

89 - Why are indulgences only issued when the pope sees fit to issue them ?

Luther's main complaint against the Catholic Church was that it was supporting a system that left sinners in sin - and this was the institution that was meant to save lost souls !!

In October 1517, Luther pinned his "95 Theses" to a church door in Wittenburg. This was his views on indulgences. There was nothing unusual about this process. It was the standard practice to put up an idea you had for others to read and then to comment on.

What Theses of Martin Luther would upset the papacy the most?

Actually, most of the 95 Theses were remarkably already Catholic dogma, so the most upsetting thing about them to his Bishop and the Pope would have been his remarkable ignorance in wanting to discuss changing something that was already Catholic dogma. There are, however, several that are more than a little troubling, for instance, number 16. "There seems to be the same difference between hell, purgatory, and heaven as between despair, uncertainty, and assurance." This is a remarkable statement for any Catholic priest to make. The only people who are in purgatory are those assured of heaven, they are just being cleansed of the residual sin on their soul so that they may be made perfect to enter heaven. To compare that to "uncertainty" shows a remarkable lack of knowledge in one who should have known better. There are others along the same line, but I think that one should answer your question.
