Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is a branch of engineering that encompasses the generation and application of heat and mechanical power and the design, production, and use of machines and tools. Mechanical engineering involves application of the principles of dynamics, control, thermodynamics and heat transfer, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, materials science, electronics, and mathematics.

How do you remove a mild steel fitting from a pipe?

try 2 pipe wrenches or cut the pipe and remove remaining with a nipple extractor avail about any plumbing supply or home center

How do you tighten the back bolt under your sink that leads to your angle valve?

Are you asking about the supply line where it attaches to the faucet? If so, they make a wrench that has teeth like a pipe wrench and the head swivels for tighten and loosen. $6 or so. Handy to have for tight places. Most hardware or lumber supply should have it.

Where can you get plans to build a hammer mill for milling grain?

I have the same question. I've been looking for a small hammer mill for making mesquite bean flour. The only hammer mill that I've found for home/small farm use is the Novital, made in Italy, sold in Australia for $570 delivered. On the internet you can find Amy Smith's screenless hammer mill but I have yet to see a plan clear enough to make one myself; emails to Smith have not been responded to. I think her plan was a thesis at MIT so it might be possible through interlibrary loan to get the thesis. Also, on Ebay there is an offering of 25 patents for various kinds of mills--I've just sent for the package so can't say where it includes a plan for a small hammer mill.

If you run across any good plans, let me know. Good luck. Evan Blythin blythin@hotmail.com

here is a site that has plans to build your own hammer mill if you are a hands on type

If the weld pool is cooled slowly it will rapidly oxidize?

Rapid oxidation (rust) occurs when oxygen, in the surrounding air, is allowed to reach the molten pool. Time does not factor into the equation. Most welding processes utilize a medium to protect the weld puddle until it solidifies. An inert gas ( ie: argon, helium, CO2) and or a liquid material perform this function. In some instances the heat burns off the oxygen. Once the puddle has solidified the oxidation process is slowed considerably. Any unprotected metal will oxidize (rust) except stainless and some nickle/copper alloys. Even aluminum oxidizes but only to a certain depth.

Why are stainless steel passive?

stainless steels are specials grades of steel with a minimum of 10% chromium. tool steels also contain chromium but they differ from the fact that the stainless steels have very low percentage of carbon. presence of carbon is a negative factor because chromium has high affinity to carbon and oxygen. chromium carbide is undesirable , only chromium oxide is necessary as it forms the thin layer referred to as the passive film. chromic oxide is very stable oxide that forms spontaneously on stainless steels upon exposure to air. this thin layer must be uniform, continuous, and free from defects for corrosion resistance. the passive film hence formed should not be disturbed in any case else corrosion becomes inevitable.there many processes like pickling, passivating, mechanical and electrochemical cleaning performed to remove any rust so that the passive film is uniform to prevent corrosion.

What is diaphragm used for a centrifugal compressor?

diaphrams are static ones containing guide blades...steam from suction end enters the suction diaphragm and get guided to impeller of centrifugal compressor..ntermediate diaphrams contains diffusers which changes pressure energy..these daphragms forms a part of inner casing.

How can you tell if your mechanic replaced your engine?

the engine number will no longer match what the i.d tag has stamped into it

^ Well stated and cannot be explained in better detail... THumbs up

If an item can withstand 300000 PSI of pressure what is its Tensile Strength?

Your question is vague. Any way if it can withstand 300000 PSI the tensile strength is higher than that. It depends on the material since Tensile strength is known as ultimate tensile strength at which level the item fails.

What is M-2 high speed steel?

M-2 is a general purpose molybdenum-type high speed steel. It is the most commonly produced high speed steel worldwide. It is used for drills, reamers, taps, pucnhs, pins and dies. It hardens to RC 65, when heat treated at 2225 degrees F.

What is Scope of mechanical engineering in these days?

mechanical engineering is a stream of engineering which deals with design and manufacturing. It has a tremendous scope in automobile engineering, cement industry, steel, power sector, Hydraulics, etc. It involves applications of all streams of engineering like Civil engineering(mechanics), computer engineering(CAD,CAM,CAE), electronics engineering(mechatronics). It is rightly called a EVERGREEN BRANCH.

Why can a semiconductor measure temperature?

Semiconductor resistance depends on temperature.

So, you can use a shunt resistor to measure semiconductor voltage with a given current and, then, obtain temperature.

What is ANSI 837?

a database standard used by health agencies.

What is the difference between Pipe lining and pipe coating?

Pipe Lining refers to the internal diameter, pipe coating is external.

How do you size wastewater treatment plants?

Sage treatment whether primary , secondary or tertiary is usually dependant on residence time in the various stages of the treatment (settling, biotreatment, chlorination etc.) This makes the capacity of the plant equivalent to the ration of the normal maximum throughput , its concentration of contaminants and the retention capacity needed in the longest (or slowest) treatment stage.Som parts of the process such as chlorination or MLSS return can be sped up but not by much.

What is welding generator?

A welding generator is an electricity generator that is commonly used in places where the power needed to arc weld is not readily available. They are usually powered by gas or diesel engines and have a high, stable energy output suitable for powering a welding machine.

Who invented the auto-darkening welding helmet?

Previous answer was ignorance at its best. I don't know if it was one or more individuals. As a last resort the patent office would have the answer. Anybody care to weigh in?

What is the strongest type of dome?

A geodesic dome is made up of many triangles and very strong.

In a wind turbine - does increasing the blade length or decreasing the blade length increases the speed of the turbine?

Decreasing the blade length will increase the rotation speed, and thus the turbine speed ( for constant wind speed ).

What is the Youngs Modulus of the Polycarbonate used in concave Riot shields?

Most riot shields list the material of construction as Lexan, the trade name for the polycarbonate polymer. The young's modulus of polycarbonate is 2.0-2.4 GPa (gigapascals).

How does water kept in an earthen pot become cool during summers?

Physics explains this principle well - when evaporation takes place, cooling occurs. This is because for evaporation to take place, the water needs to change into vapor or gas and this only happens when there is heat in the surroundings. So when the water absorbs heat, it evaporates and this makes the container or surroundings cooler. The earthen pitcher contains many pores or small holes. When water is poured into the pot, a small part of it exits through these pores and evaporates from the surface of the pot, thus making the pot (and remaining water) cooler than before.
