Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is a branch of engineering that encompasses the generation and application of heat and mechanical power and the design, production, and use of machines and tools. Mechanical engineering involves application of the principles of dynamics, control, thermodynamics and heat transfer, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, materials science, electronics, and mathematics.

What is the fabricated pipe and pipe-fitting industry dependent on?

The U.S. fabricated pipe and pipe-fitting industry is strongly dependent on the health of the domestic construction industry, which, after enduring rough economic conditions in the late 1980s and early 1990s, rebounded in the mid-1990s.

What is mean slippage in hydraulic pump?

Slippage is oil leaking from a pressure outlet to a low-pressure area or back to an inlet. A drain passage allows leaking oil to return to an inlet or a reservoir. Some slippage is designed into pumps for lubrication purposes. Slippage will increase with pressure and as a pump begins to wear. Oil flow through a given orifice size depends on the pressure drip. An internal leakage path is the same as an orifice. Therefore, if pressure increases, more flow will occur through a leakage path and less from an outlet port. Any increase in slippage is a loss of efficiency.

What is principle plane?

If you mean principal palne, it is th e plane of a member where its tension stress is maximum and shear stress zero ( principal stress). It is the highest stress and is often used to compute failure against tensile allowable. Failure will generally occur in the direction of that plane.

What is an lsometric drawing?

An isometric drawing is a schematic detailing a three-dimensional object in an abstract space that has no vanishing point. So, you can see the thickness of the object, but all sides remain parallel, unlike how objects appear in real life. In real life, the sides of an object converge as they get farther and farther from the eye. Think of a building whose sides slope into a point off in the distant horizon. These drawings are helpful in giving precise measurements, scale, placement and proportions. A good example of an isometric drawing would be the assembly instructions that come with a piece of household furniture.

What is the ideal mechanical advantage of a fixed pulley raising a 1 kg can of paint a distance of 10 m?

The mechanical advantage doesn't depend on the distance the load moves,

any more than it depends on the color of the paint in the can.

If the pulley is hanging from the ceiling and you pull down, then the ideal MA is 1 .

If the rope is fixed to the ceiling, the pulley rides on it, and the load is hanging

from the pulley, then the ideal MA is 2 .

What is the clearance volume of petrol engine?

The volume occupied by the cylinder when the piston is at top dead centre is called clearence valume.

Can a machine multiply distances?

...yes... due to the mechanical advantage that the machine or simple machine has. adn im not a virgin anymore

What are the basic design requirements for a simple hydraulic or pneumatic device?

-your device must use hydraulics to exert a large force, using minimal space.

- your hydraulic system must transmit motion smoothly.

-you must be able to operate your device with no breakage of parts.

What is back to back pressure testing for hydraulic cylinders?

Hydraulic cylinders can be tested dynamically by connecting the test cylinder with a master cylinder mounted within a rigid frame structure. Usually the test cylinder is

operated with a hydraulic power source and the master cylinder is loaded with relief

and check valves connected to the ports.

Such back to back test loads the total cylinder components including the Rod, tube,

Gland ,seals ,mounting parts etc and can reveal many parameters which cannot be seen in the conventional end to end load test. Similar set up can be also used for

life cycle test extending to millions of full load cycles.

What is function of generating set radiator?

A Generating Set is usually a Internal Combustion engine mechanically driving an AC Alternator or DC Dynamo. The most common type of GEN SET would be a Diesel Engine / AC alternator used as a AC power generator. Could be a primary power source or secondary source i.e. a back up AC power source for important building like Hospitals etc.

Thus most of these Diesel engines are water cooled and would need a radiator to cool the engine / via the engine coolant being pumped through the radiator. (Much like many cars.) The radiator usually will have a fan blowing air through the radiator vanes to improve cooling effect.

What is staggered welding?

STAGGERED INTERMITTENT FILLET WELDTwo lines of intermittent welding on a joint, such as a tee joint, wherein the fillet increments in one line are staggered with respect to those in the other line.Regards, Dineshraj.m

Relationship between bulk modulus and poissons ratio?

K=E/(3*(1-2v))

K: Bulk modulus

E: young modulus

v: poison's ratio

on the other hand:

delta V/V=(1-2v)*delta L/L

relative change in Volume equals to: (1-2v) * relative change in length.

Why cast iron is good for machine bases?

Grey cast iron is good for machine bases due to its capacity of absorbing vibration. This can be explained through its microstructure, where graphite works as great shock absorber.

What is initial stress?

The initial stress is the stress of the object before any force is applied to it, which in most cases would be zero ideally. However, the different composites that make up the material react differently to external influences, temperature comes to mind, and may therefore have a net, non-zero stress before an external load is applied.

What is a hinged beam?

It is a beam that is attached at aboundary that is free to rotate, like a hinge. It cannot develop a bending moment. It is often used to idealize a simply supported beam

What is the difference between joints and bedding planes?

Bedding planes are found exclusively in sedimentary rock. Joints are more common in igneous rock, but can be found in sedimentary rock as well. Igneous rock can never have bedding planes, but does have pseudo-bedding planes.

Npti ranking in pgdc?

Dear All PGDC asspirants

NPTI Nangal & Nayvelly are new institutes among all, but a decreasing priority order may look like as.......

1. NPTI BADARPUR

2.NPTI DURGAPUR

3.NPTI NAGPUR

4.NPTI GUWAHATI.

5. NPTI NANGAL

6. NPTI NAYVELLY.........

BUT last year guwahati has 100% placement meanwhile others have more or less same but satisfactory.

Placement is a game of time and fortune so dont bother about that.

Good luck

What is the Thickness of sheet metal on a car?

Year, Make and model need to be taken into consideration, 18 gauge is about the midpoint, some manufacturers / years may be thicker or thinner. The best way to match material size, is to use a metal thickness gauge on a known, good sample.

How do you join asbestos pipe and iron pipe?

You wold join asbestos pipe and iron pipe with great care, being sure to avoid disturbing the asbestos pipe or releasing dust. The best solution would be to remove the asbestos pipe (following established procedures to ensure it is done properly, by qualified people) and run new pipe.
