What would cause high idle in a 1977 Mercedes Benz 450 SL?
I would think that you have some sort of vacuum leak. When you have the car in park, then shift it to Drive...is there much of a change in RPM's? If there is a slight change in RPM, that's another way of checking for a vacuum leak. This is a 31 year old car. Many or all of the vacuum hoses should have been replaced by now. They get old and brittle, and break easily. Also check the central locking system to see if that's working properly. That could also be a source you might want to check. There is an air resovoir under the front right fender, with a single vacuum line coming into it. Check that line, as it's one that can break easily. If you have a vacuum pressure gauge, you might want to check out the doors, trunk, and gas filler lid. The doors with central locking use a lot of vacuum hoses. I would suggest that you check out your vacuum lines under the hood, check them for brittleness. If you can't get a 45 degree bend out of them, replace them...anything past that will certainly break the lines. I would also suggest that you buy about 12 feet of vacuum line and replace all the lines at one time. You figure if one is going, the rest are right behind. Also remove the air cleaner, as there are 3 or 4 vacuum lines that route under the air cleaner. If this doesn't cure the problem...you could have a leaky fuel injector, a bad intake gasket, or it could be a couple of other items such as the choke sensor, or air slide...which can cost you a few bucks...so check those last. I assume this high idle happens all the time...but just in case...if it happens only when you apply the brakes...you would have a rock hard brake pedal, and that would cause a drastic idle change...you would need a new power brake booster. You should know that these old SL's have a ton of switches in them...many are electric, the others are vacuum activated...this car relies heavily on its vacuum systems. I hope this helps you.
Change oil 2003 Mercedes Benz sl 500?
You can buy after market dipstick (about $50.00 with shipping) that will check your oil level. Plug is located on fire wall passenger side. Dipstick is only used to check oil level, you have to remove it and replace with the plug. Mercedes Benz dealers change oil from dipstick using an engine oil extractor (from $20.00 to $100.00). Use only 0w40 mobile 1 $7.00, use fleece filter by Mann Filter $13.00. I change my oil every 10,000 miles. Total oil change with oil filter under $70.00. I use K&N Air filters last 100,000 miles. Air filters $30.00 to $50.00 one time charge. Reusable air filter with recharger kit K&N 99-5050 about $10.00. Uses recharger kit every 10,000 miles.
I have a 95 Mercedes sl500 can i reset the oil light after oil has been changed?
I haven't had experience on this particular model - however on other MBs I have found that if you use the owners manual and follow the index and footnotes for the service lamp (or restting oil service light) your speaking of there is generally, sort of hidden, a paragraph on how to do it. Believe it or not, it takes a combination of key position and pushing radio buttons!
What hydralic oil is used in a Mercedes 500sl top pump?
Go to MB and buy their hydraulic oil. It's formulated by MB for their products. Also, if you need oil for your system, you need to find out where you're system is leaking.
I had leakage in both of the front hydraulic units....and when they let loose, you can get sprayed with oil while driving...and the stuuf gets all over the place. Check the front window pillars for oil residue.

What is the oil capacity for a 1991 Mercedes 500SL?
The oil capacity is around 8.5 qts. of oil. If you're replacing the oil filter, it will take another 1/2 qt....maybe a dash more. When you go to buy the oil, you can have the counter man at the store look up the exact amount of oil you'll be needing. Depending on your mileage, Mobil 1 is recommended. If you have more than 80,000 miles on the engine, you might want to consider a 10-40 natural oil. Remember, synthetic oil costs about 3 times as much as regular oil, but lasts longer...again...a high mileage engine might burn through it, and not be recommended. You can call your local MB dealer and ask them what oil they suggest for your car...they're happy to help you on these things.

Is the battery in an Sl500 battery positive or negative ground?
Batteries are neither positive nor negative ground. It is the circuit itself that determines the common ground.
For example: If I have two circuits, one needing 6vdc negative ground and the other needing 6vdc positive ground, the battery would be installed the same way in both circuits (positive terminal on the battery to the positive connection in the circuit, regardless of whether the circuit is positive or negative ground).
The reason for labeling the ground as Positive or Negative has more to do with how the circuit is wired up, than the actual voltage source. The explanation for that is beyond the scope of this answer.
