Make sure the following are true: 1) your luggage covered is pulled out and hooked into the upper rear post holders (passenger side holder has sensor to prevent top from working if cover not firmly pulled out and seated. Note: My manual as well as some European based websites refer to the luggage cover as being "closed" when it is pulled all the way out as opposed to when retracted, The passenger side area the bar drops into has a sensor to prevent up and firmly seated in the uppermost post holders, 2) your key is in the #2 position (once again the manual notes that there are four positions and numbers them 0-3, so 2 is right before the last notch which starts the engine, meaning the engine should not be on), 3) make sure your trunk is TIGHTLY closed (another sensor to prevent damage), 4) MAKE SURE YOUR PARKING BRAKE IS FULLY ENGAGED, 5) check the light on the roof switch, IF THE LIGHT IS BLINKING SLOWLY you have a system malfunction (on these I would look for any signs of brake fluid leakage from any of the pistons in the trunk) but if a system problem you should follow specific instructions in the manual regarding how to manually but the top up and lock it in place (takes two people); if the SWITCH LIGHT IS BLINKLY RAPIDLY, you are likely in luck as the most common causes of the top not rising would be either 1) the luggage pull out cover not being pulled out (in the case of a car with the top up) or somehow the passenger side of the pole holding up the luggage cover may have been dislodged or simply is not firmly seated as it rests on a trigger sensor, or 2) your trunk lid is not firmly closed (another sensor), make sure the trunk is firmly closed therefore and just be sure that it has not been closed with something in the way. Bottom line simply opening the top could dislodge the post, especially if it is not centered, as well as put some upward pressure on a trunk not firmly seated on the sensor.

I hope you have better luck than I. I went to Advance Auto Parts, and had one of their techs to run the code on the computer. It was a "Secondary Air Injection Malfunction." In the SLK 230, secondary air is pulled off the supercharger, which in my case cost $3100 . There ARE many more codes, including a faulty gas cap which will trigger a "Check engine" light. I wish you well, and hope your code is a cheap fix. The dealer said mine was probably the worst one to have.

On my 1998 SLK 230, at 2000 miles before the next service is due, a wrench appears in the screen below the trip odometer at the bottom of the speedometer when the igniton is turned on. When you go past 2000 miles without servicing and reseting the maintenance service reminder, it will start counting the miles past due. -400 means you are 400 miles past due for service, most likely an oil change. When the service reminder is reset, it resets to 7500 miles until it reminds you again for the next service. If you change the oil yourself as I do, I can reset the service reminder in my 1998 by: Turn the key in steering lock to position 1 Press the trip odometer reset button and hold Turn key in steering lock to position 2 After about 10 seconds, you will hear a chime and the display will show 7500 miles Release the trip odometer reset button

Could very well be the Mass Air Flow Sensor or the Oxygen sensor. If you are getting a P0170 code from diagnostic check these two items first. Both parts can be purchased for about $200 each. They are relatively easy to change... even for a novice.

remove the 2 screws that hold the console cover hinge

then inside the console pull up about 2" of the material from the bottom rear of the console - it should come up easily - there are two nuts there that must be removed.

then gently pry up the chrome plastic square trim that surrounds the shifter. Then gently pry up the outter plastic part around the shifter - there are two screws under there that must be removed.

Then it lifts out and the elect components have quick dicsonnects

If you've recently interrupted the power supply (battery) then you will need to input the radio code. The code should be in your paperwork, if not, contact your dealer for the code. You can not see the battery simply from opening the hood. But, you can still jump the battery. The positive terminal for the battery is located under a red plastic hatch to the left of the engine. Put the red (+) jumper clamp on this terminal. Then clamp the black (neg) jumper clamp on a bare bolt or piece of metal that is attached to the vehicle. Be careful of the fan blade! Connect the jumpers to the other car. Start the "other car. If possible, have someone "rev" the engine a liittle bit while you (?) fire-up the SLK.
