Can not locate block heater cord on your 94 Mercury Topaz Recently bought car and unable to find the cord to plug in its -28 C out car is frozen solid and wont start any advice on where to find cord?

First of all, does it have a block heater? If you do not see an electrical cord coming from mid engine area, then you just might not have one. If the car does not start, and most likely it is flooded with gas, then it really needs a warm garage to check or change the plugs and have the oil and filter changed. Then you can have a block heater installed ( if you do not have one of course ).

How do you keep Mercury Topaz trunk open?

There are two torsion style bars that should hold it open. To get to them you have to remove the material/pressed board cover at the top of the trunk. there should be 3 pus pins near the part closest to you. the long ends of the bar get pushed into a hole in the truck lid supports. The other end is hooked into one of the three notches a bit farther to the sides of the trunk. Hopefully one is still in there for you to see. They can be really difficult to put back in. If you slip it may really hurt you. The side that links into the notches should be in the middle notch. i put it in the lowest one then hook the long end into the trunk support. you may have to pry it in with the tire lever... Then once I get that end in i slip a small wrench over the hooked end to move it up to the middle notch. Good Luck. I have had to do it on 2 of my Topazes and its a pain every time.

Why is my 92 mercury topaz requiring me to give it throttle to start at any time?

Hello. i would suggest that the car needs atuneup. There are a few cheaper options to try first. Replace the spark plugs. If it has never been done it needs it anyways. That might be all it needs. Replacing the distributor cap and rotor are a good idea too. Even the spark plug wires. If you haven't used injector cleaner also put a bottle of it in next time you fill up with fuel. I used a set of NGK TR55GP plugs in mine and it starts beautifully now. Cost me about $20 for the 4 plugs. They are an iridium tip plug which helps on start up.

Is it safe to drive if the battery light is on?

The battery warning light is normally an indication that the battery is not being charged. In most cases, it means that the alternator is not generating electrical power. Driving a car in this condition does not cause any danger but all electrical power is being supplied by the battery rather than the engine. When the battery discharges, the car will simply stop running.

Although it is safe to continue for a short time, it's important to get the car looked at and repaired.

How do you change out an harmonic balancer on a 1993 Mercury Topaz?

Big job! The motor has to be lowered to get at the bolt to take it off. If you have a welder I would just notch out a square in the inner fender well to get the wrench in. Then just use a rubber peice from a floor mat to keep the water out. Other than that its a peice of cake. Take the belt off, one bolt , take it off put new one on and tighten New bolt. Big Job indeed! You have to remove the upper left motor mount while you are supporting the engine. Then you have to remove both lower engine mounting plates which are located under the radiator. Disconnect the two front stabilizer mounts when you are down there too. Remove the two plates and slowly drop the engine to where you can see the Harmonic balancer bolt. Put a 21 MM socket on it and hit it with decent impact gun removing the bolt. Next see if you have enough room to extract the pully. I did not have enough room and ended up cutting about 1/2 inch of metal from the inner wheel well. Next put on a puller and take off the pully. Mine was on very tight and I needed a good puller. Take your time it can be done and The GL on the back of the car mean Good Luck because you will need it. My car was the 3.0 v-6

What do the timing marks on a mercury topaz 1988 4 cylinder look like?

There is a little window on the fly wheel housing. when open you will see small lines inscribed on the casing. If you turn the engine by hand you will see the mark on the flywheel. Usually you use a white chalk to the line on the flywheel and the mark on the housing. With a timing lite on the number 1 cyl. you will see the marks where they line up. Adjust with the dist. to what you want, but first un-plug the wire harness at the bottom of the dist. before you can check the timing. The plug will be at the lower end of the dist. just to the right.

How do you get the plastic cover off headlights to clean the inside i have a 92 topaz?

They don't come off. If the lens are yellowed, then the best to do is replace them. The cost for these model's is around $ 100 bucks each, I don't know why so expensive, but try and find a deal somewhere. On a Crown Vic. they cost only $ 45. bucks each. Some might tell you to buy the compound and clean them, you can, but nothing works better than new ones. What I did, bought after market 55 watt. and installed them on the bumper, aligned them with the head lite. and wow, you can see where u r going. Total cost $ 60.00

Good Luck.

Now that's not totally true. Headlight lenses are secured using a strong adhesive. I havent tried this but I have seen people take there headlights completely out and and put them in a oven to heat the glue, and therefore make it loose enough to pull the plastic peice off. Im sure you can acheive the same thing with a heat gun.. Now If you think that it is to much of an involed process there is a way to clean the outside lense and actually be proud of the look. Oriley's sells a kit that attaches to any drill. It runs roughly 20$ but in my opion is worth every penny. This kit comes with a 500 grit, 800 grit, and 3000 grit sand paper. You start with the 500 grit sandpaper which will sand the outside of your headlights( do not worry it prolly takes less than a millimeter of plastic off the headlight). After that work with the 800 grit sandpaper. This will help to smooth out the what the 500 grit sandpaper left behind. Next will be the 3000 grit sandpaper. This will really polish the headlights and will be the last sanding step in the process. The headlights will look pretty good, but pretty good is not what were aiming for. Inside the kit there will be a soft pad and a solution of 3M. Apply this to the soft orange pad, attach it to the drill, and begin polishing the headlights to an even finer and clearer look. This last part will really make a world of difference in the end result. The whole process took me approx 45 mins at most.. The more time you spend on each step the better the results. I was able to take 10 year old headlights and make them look factory new and not only that visabillity, while somewhat minute, was improved. Save your money and give this kit a try. I can almost garuntee you will be imprssed with your results and will be glad that you did not invest extra money into new headlights.
