Why is john c fremont important to Nevada?
Fremont wasn't important in Nevada history but California history. Captain John C. Fremont just "happened" to be in CA with several dozen well armed men in 1846 to help overthrown Mexican rule. He collaborated with American naval officers and with local Americans to claim the Bear Flag Republic. His men took the Mexican governor to John Sutter's fort to be held as they established the republic. Fremont had all ready seen Sutter to set this up and forced Sutter to decide if he would go with the Americans or the Mexicans when this happened. Even though Sutter got his land from a Mexican land grant he went with the Americans.
Fremont was an interesting man. He was on the Louis and Clark expedition as a young man and then took part in the establishment of the state of CA. He had been in and out of the CA several times. On one of his visits in he was trapped by the Mexican army on a mountain located on the CA central coast. The Mexican army was encamped below where Fremont and his men were camped, but as the night moved on he and his men quietly moved down the backside of the mountain leaving the Mexican army behind. In 1856 Fremont ran for president under banner of the Republican party, but because of his illegitimate birth and the fact he was Catholic the the Know Nothings party were able to beat him.
