If an employee finds a tick on himself after leaving work and seeks medical attention is that OSHA Recordable?

Not all medical treatment is an OSHA Recordable event. If the treatment is at the level of first aid care, it is not recordable- even if performed by a physician. If the treatment is a simple one (remove tick with tweezers, clean skin, apply bandaid) that would not be a recordable. A DEEPLY EMBEDDED tick that requires numbing the skin, using a scalpel to remove tick, etc- is beyond simple first aid, and would likely be recordable.

Is it acceptable by OSHA to plug an extension cord into another extension cord?

In Canada this is quite acceptable. One extension cord can be plugged into another extension cord. What has to be kept in mind though, is the load amperage at the end of the cords. Additionally plugging one cord into another increases the wire's total resistance. This effects the over all voltage drop of the cord, by lowering the voltage at the load. If the cord's wire size is increase in each additional cord added to the length, this would be one way to combat against the voltage drop. An example, if the first cord has a #14 size conductor the next size cord to plug into it should be a #12. If additional length is needed then the next size cord to extend the length should be a #10.This type of cord use is used on construction sites all the time.

Keep in mind that extension cords are only to be used as a temporary source of power in temporary locations and they not to be used as a permanent installation power source.

What are OSHA 6 steps for lockout tagout?

  • Prepare for shutdown. This includes notifyingteam members who will be affected by the procedure. On the line, we usually notify the supervisor and they in turn will notify others that need to know.
  • Shut down the machine. This may involve reviewingthe procedure to make sure that it is done correctly.
  • Identify all the hazardous energy sources. Electricity is just one source. They're all listed in our procedures. Be sure to identify "hidden" sources of energy. These sources may be residual or stored energy sources.
  • Isolate or neutralize all hazardous energy sources. This includes shutting of switches, turning off valves, and various other actions.
  • Lockout the energy sources. This is usually done at the same time you perform step 4. Be sure to neutralize and secure residual and stored energy.
  • The most important step is this one, verify your lockout procedure. Make sure that the machine is completely locked out…and that you have the right machine!

Is arc flash safety analysis as described by NFPA 70e required by OSHA?

This is a very complicated matter, but as a practical matter the answer is "Yes."

The analysis should be entrusted to an expert in NFPA 70E, OSHA regs, and Arc Flash Hazard Analysis. Arc Flash warning labels alert employees of the dangers they are about to encounter and inform them of the correct PPE.

According to OSHA regional director Richard Terrill, "The employer is required to conduct an assessment in accordance with CFR 1910.132(d)(1). If an arc flash is present, or likely to be present, then the employer must select and require employees to use protective apparel. Employees who conduct the hazard/risk assessment, and select and require their employees to use protective clothing and offer PPE appropriate for the task, as stated in the NFPA 70E, are deemed in compliance with the hazard assessment and equipment selection OSHA standard."
