What is odometer fraud and how can you determine if your odometer has been tampered with?
Odometer fraud occurs when illegal changes are made to the mileage shown on a used vehicle's title and odometer. This is usually done to mask high mileage on late-model used cars. Visually inspect the car to see if its condition matches the miles shown on the odometer. Check to see which parts have been replaced. Unscrupulous individuals sometimes use paint to make old parts look newer. Check the inspection certificate. It will have the date of inspection, mileage at the time of inspection, place of inspection and the inspector's name recorded on it. Look for lube or maintenance stickers on the left doorframe, in the glove compartment, under the hood, in the trunk, etc. These often contain mileage information. Check with the manufacturer to see what work was done under the warranty and what the mileage was at the time the work was done. Check to see if the numbers on the odometer gauge are aligned straight across. If they are crooked, the odometer may have been tampered with. If the car has a General Motors mechanical odometer, the spaces between the numbers should be black. If they are silver or white, the odometer has been tampered with. If the car has an electronic odometer, it has been designed to show an asterisk or some other sign if it has been tampered with. Information regarding this will be contained in the owner's manual. Research the vehicle's title history through the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles, or through a commercial title checking company. Be suspicious if the vehicle was sold several times in a few months. Be skeptical of former fleet vehicles with low mileage. These vehicles are driven an average of 32,000 miles per year and are almost never taken out of service early.
If my Mazda MPV 2001 odometer dashboard light is out is there a lamp to replace or a fuse?
I replaced the bulb and now it works again.
- Go to an auto parts store and buy #74 bulbs (I found they were a little big, but I still managed to squeeze it in)
- Take off the dash panel cover (undo 2 screws located above the steering wheel)
- Grab the panel by the air vents and give it a tug to dislodge all the retaining clips around the panel.
- Undo 3 screws that hold the instrument cluster in place and you will be able to remove it from behind the steering wheel (optionally, disconnect the 4 wiring harnesses for easier removal)
- Turn the instrument cluster around and use needle nose pliers to twist out the light base behind the odometer.
- Remove burnt out bulb from the twist lock base, (but save the green rubber bulb cover) and replace with a new one (put the green rubber cover on the new bulb).
- Twist the light back in (doesn't matter if it's upside down)
- Reassemble instrument cluster, and test the lights by turning the ignition to "ACC" or start the engine.
- Replace the dash panel
FYI - while I had mine apart, I visually inspected ALL bulbs to see if any others were burnt out. I found 4 that I had to replace! Makes you wonder what would happen if your Check Engine light was burnt out.
How do I reset the trip odometer in a Jeep Liberty 2006?

How do you repair an avalanche odometer not working?
You have a problem with the stepper motor gauge that Chevy used in the 02-06? Avalanche. All the gauges use the same stepper motor. They just go wonky and do all kinds of weird things. I have replaced two on mine already and two more are now acting up. There is a guy selling the motors and the repair for this problem on E-bay.
How do you disable the odometer on a 2008 3500 dodge ram diesel?
You can't, gthe mileage is stored in multiple computers. If you unplug all the abs sensors and the engine computer doesn't get the speed signal the trans will not shift properly(if at all). the engine may also detune to idle only.
Can you reset the odometer when you replace the engine?
No, it is illegal to reset the odometer because it does nt just track engine miles buy also mileage of the tranny body and other parts. If it stops working you can replace it with a new one set to zero but the cars mileage is recorded on the title so you will have to take that into account if your trying to sell it as a newer car.
Speedometer and odometer not working in Honda Accord?
Try letting the reset knob snap back when you release it. Do it a couple of times. Sometimes the mechanism doesn't re-engage and you have to work the reset buttom a few times.
If your speed sensor is not at fault, then the problem lies within the electronics of the speedometer iteslf. Buying a used one will not gaurantee the problem will be resolved or will not return. I'm an electonic Technologist and repair this type of fault regularly. Email me for more information.

Why is my odometer light dim on 2002 Ford Explorer?
Assuming you have a digital odometer, the dimming is most likely caused by one or more cracked solder joints on the circuit board that provides the power and information to the odometer display module.
This is a very common problem on 2002 Explorers and a great many Ford F-Series pickups and SUVs (model years 1999 - 2003). The problem will continue to worsen with time as the cracks continue to deteriorate, progressing from a dim odometer display to an intermittent display. Many times the display numerals will disappear altogether and (hopefully) return sometime later. Eventually the display will vanish and remain dark until the problem is repaired.
Although your Ford dealer's standard remedy for this problem is to replace the entire instrument cluster (at a cost of around $600), you can actually easily repair the problem yourself for free. A Google search for "Ford Intermittent Odometer" will provide several excellent sources of information about the problem. You can also obtain a repair manual written specifically for this problem at http://www.odometer-repair.com .
1989 BMW odometer not working?
Yes if it has stopped working but everything else is including the trip odometer it's probably the coding plug on the back of the cluster for 02/89 and up or if it's made in 11 of 88 it will be in the harness plug on the back of the cluster. It costs about 450 to 500 and needs to match the code. To find the code turn off the ignition and push in the trip reset button then turn the ignition on keep holding the button in it will show you a 5 digit number you will need to get it right.
What causes the odometer and trip odometer on my 1998 mustang to fail?
Most odometers are connected to the transmission, the cable may have worked free on the trans or behind the dash.
Its could be a bad fuse. Try replacing the fuse first before moving onto more expensive fixes.
How to repair Odometer for 1999 Nissan Sentra SE?
The repair for an odometer on the 1999 Nissan Sentra SE varies depending on the type of damage. You might repair the odometer by simply replacing the fuse for this part. You might also repair the odometer by replacing the cables.
I'm pretty sure they are cable driven. Often the plastic gear that the speedo cable plugs into in the gauge will wear out and fail. But before assuming that, check the cable itself. If isn't broken than it's probably the gauge in the cluster.

How do you replace the odometer on a 2002 Ford Ranger?
you don't unles your trying to rip somebody off. If your odometer is truly busted in my state you have to have a cert. mechanic do the work and the state changes the status of your vehicles title to "salvage". Yup-salvage as in-it could have been in a total wreck or in your case it doesnt have the original, MATCHING, odom. which from my staes point of view is the same as salvage. If you don't care what the title says, you don't ever want to sell the auto, just find one in a jubk yard, take the dash apart until you get to the odom. Its just a cable but it will probably have a 'seal' of some sort which you'll have to break. But-if its just for you-well I shouldn't say that because you still have to deal with state inspections and I am not a legal expert. You really have to ask a cert. mech. ijn your state or ask your states DOT. Used car dealers do it all the time, of course, but sometimes states like to make examples of ther ;little' guys, just be careful
How do you get an odometer working on a 1996 Ford Taurus GL if the speedometer is working?
Replace the speedo head assembly. It is a sealed unit, with no servicable parts. If the speedometer is working, then the cable and the speedo drive gears are working. The failure must be inside of the speedo head assembly itself.
Don't know what you're working on but it sounds like you have accidently disconnected the speedometer cable from the speedometer. Check it out.
How do you disconnect the odometer on a 2006 Chev Malibu. Its for towing reasons.?
I don't think so. Disconnecting the odometer is illegal, and besides, you tow a FWD car with the front wheels off the ground and in that manner the odometer does not register miles. Towing it with the front wheels touching the ground will damage the transmission. So if towed correctly this is a mute issue.
Why does the speedometer odometer and gas gauge only work sometimes on 1997 Neon?
I had the same problem, tried all kinds of things to fix it. the only thing that works it to take out the instrment cluster, remove the circut board and then resolder all the solders for the two connector plugs.
