I think there is some kind of speed sensor attached to the transmission. Probably a bad conection, a true Chevy trait. VBdenny
There are two possible actions: 1) Replace the speedometer head assembly, because that is where your problem is. 2) Ignore the broken odometer and forget about it. The speedometer and odometer are one assembly. The same input that drives the speedo also drives the odometer, so you have a problem in the head itself.
ebay.........you'll have to buy the whole instrument cluster....not a tough job; just pay attention.......
How do you disconnect the odometer on a 2004 Toyota Tundra?
The odometer is electronic, there is a plug in on the back of the speedometer, however the plugin for the odometer also may power other controls, so this may not be a good idea.
I dont know why your trying to stop the odometer but your out of luck the computer keeps track of your information your odometer is just a read out like a monitor
How do you fix a broken odometer in a '94 Thunderbird?

Your speedometer and odometer suddenly stopped working whats wrong and how do you fix it?
It really depends upon the type of car (year, brand, model, etc.). I had the same issue on a 90 Honda Accord. This particular car had a sending unit on the transaxle (transmission) that failed. The connection from the sending unit to the speedometer is electrical. I replaced the sending unit and all was well. Other cars have a cable that connects from the transmission to the speedometer. If you have this type of car, the problem could be the cable, the gear at the end of the cable that runs off of the transmission or the speedometer itself. More information is needed to provide further details. What type of car do you have? Do you have a manual?
Replacing the light behind the odometer?
i have a 2001 escape with a bad back lite. It is an easy replacement. I found the following description to be accurate.
Set the hand brake, put the shift lever in low, drop the steering wheel to its lowest position, and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove 2 screws from the cluster bezel and pull it out. Remove 4 additional screws from the cluster and pull it out far enough to disconnect 3 electrical connectors on back. Remove the cluster and remove the bulb behind the odometer display by twisting its holder and pulling. Install a new bulb in the existing holder or get a new bulb with holder. Installation is the reverse. No scan tool is required. The odometer mileage is held in non-volatile memory and won't change.
Why would your the odometer on a 2000 Ford Windstar stop working?
If the speedometer does work, but the odometer doesn't work, then you have a bad speedometer head assembly. The speedo head is a microprocessor that gathers the info coming from the vehicle speed sensor and translates it for you on the speedo and the odo. If one is working, but the other isn't, then it is getting the VSS signal, it just isn't processing it right.
You could also be experiencing the below issue:
The Brake Pressure Differential Deactivation Switch (SCDS) (2B264) located under the Master Cylinder (Behind the Air Filter) over time develops a leak. This causes a short and a fuse trip, fuse #10 if the engine is on. This leak also causes brake fluid to wick down two wires to the ABS brake module (2C219). The fluid accumulates on the (always on) power connectors for the ABS brake system which are powered by fuses 101 and 102 and are both 40 amp. The fluid attacts moisture, road salt and leads to a fire when the fluid and moisture act as conductor between the hot leads and ground. This switch has been the subject of other Ford Recalls, just not the Windstar van yet. Below is a picture of the switch in question. Notice the fluid that leaked on the part below it. This switch will cause cruise control problems, speedometer, odometer and ABS brake system problems.
What do you do if the odometer on a 1995 Nissan Sentra is sticking?
If the odometer stopped working and the speedometer and cruise control still work, you have a bad odometer. It is part of the speedometer assembly so the whole thing will have to be replaced.
Is it normal for the odometer light on your Pontiac Sunfire to go out at 53K miles?
Not too unusual. Just a pain. Replace it. John In Montana
Yes, this has happened on my car 2 times now. The cluster (all of the guages in the dash) has to be replaced. This is a factory product problem. But it is not dangerous, so they have not recalled the car for it. The cost is roughly $300 plus the dealer install time...about 3 hours.
It is normal on a Sunfire. I've had two different Sunfire's and I've had to put new clusters in both of them. The first one at 38K and the second one at 42K. This is where that extended warranty comes in handy...
$6.00
Just bought a 99 Sunfire Gt. It had the odometer light out.
I pulled out the gauge cluster and on the back is a steel cover.
Remove the cover. Then where the odometer is you will see a red clip, turn to the left and remove it. It as you will see is a bulb. You can rip on off another one at the wreckers or. You will need to go to Parts Source and get the smallest(closest match in size) 12volt bulb $2.00 and then go to an electronic repair shop and have them solder in the new bulb $4.00. (you can have them solder it direct to electronic board, that's what I did).
By the way DO NOT USE AN LED OR A SUPER BRIGHT
Just tooling around on my sunfire and figuring things is what I do best.
A new gauge cluster is what everyone told me...bull I have done this repair and it works like new, beeen working great for the last 6 months.
Why did Romans use the odometer?
The Romans used the odometer to measure the distance that a hired cart had gone and thus knew the millage that the vehicle traveled and could charge accordingly.
