Pancakes and Flapjacks

Pancakes are thin, flat and often round cakes made from a batter and cooked either on a hot griddle or a frying pan. Most pancakes are quick breads which use a leavening agent such as baking powder. They are usually served with syrup, jam or fruit. In some places, such as Germany, pancakes are made from potatoes. Although associated with the United States, pancakes were actually an Ancient Greek invention, usually served as a quick breakfast for Greek troops.

How to Write An Acrostic Poem:

Write the letters of your word or phrase down the left-hand side of your page, with one letter on each line. You can skip a line between letters if you want to leave room to write more than one word.

Now, think of words which begin with each letter - don't try to make a poem yet, just write down all the words you can think of which will describe or explain pancakes. Use a thesaurus if you have trouble thinking of words! If you need more room, continue the list on another page!

Once you have a list, start thinking of how to write your poem. Which words or phrases are the best ones to describe or explain a pancake? Which will make the clearest mental image? Which will make your readers understand pancake the best?

Cooking pancakes would be frying or possibly shallow frying.

More information:

Pancakes are described as cooked "on a griddle," or "in a greased pan." Because only enough oil or grease is used to coat the cooking surface, this is not really "frying." The term for "shallow frying" is "pan frying." "Griddle" is not used as a verb: one does not "griddle" pancakes, one cooks pancakes on the griddle.
