How much do voice lessons cost?

The teacher that I am looking into costs about $25 for a half-hour, but I heard that local teachers can cost as less as $10, and teachers in big cities like NY charge about $150. Just because someone costs more doesn't mean they are better, tho!

I live in Westchester County, NY and everything this person replied is completely untrue here. As being a singing teacher myself, having taken singing lessons in the NY and NYC metro area for 15 years, and knowing the competitive rates...

a half hour lesson would cost you about $35 - $45 and depending on the degree and performance experience and hour lesson would cost $60 - $150. Now consider that singing lessons do NOT usually go for more than 45-50 minutes, since the person in training is not usually physically ready, plus those who teach at a college are also on a 50ish minute class period break.

Teachers who charge more usually are much more experienced and have a much greater knowledge of the voice, even going into muscle names and how they function when singing. They have probably performed in operas or on that same level (Broadway performers hold very little value in determining a value of a singing teacher). Plus, since most voice teachers know about this, those who do not have that much experience in performance or don't have an MA or BA in music know that they can't charge as much because thy simply are not that experienced.

It is true that lower rates for private teachers can be a great thing. You may find someone who is experienced, has a degree, and is very knowledgeable, but charges on the low side. Many teachers who are retired might do this simply because they enjoy to keep students in their lives. Also teachers who do not work for a music school may charge cheaper rates to be competitive with the local music schools and to guarantee themselves income. Just be weary that it could also be a new teacher who is learning how to give lessons and may be very inexperienced ... this does not make them horrible either. Usually if they are giving lessons, it's because they have a good understanding of the basics, which for children is all they need.

A bad teacher is one who cannot work with a students voice- not a student. If they are incapable of helping the student grow, expand the range, reach higher pitches more easily after time, or learn other techniques, than it's time to find a new teacher.
