What if there were no pesticides?

Life would certainly be very different. Without DDT in previous wars, we would have possibly seen very different outcomes. Far fewer humans would be alive today because malaria and other very nasty plagues would be rampant.

Food would be far less attractive. Your apples would have worms, your tomatoes would be very small and all food would be far more expensive.

The invention of pesticides was one of the turning points for all mankind. Without these chemicals, man would be far less abundant and far less healthy.

How do you get rid of these hard shell bugs that curl up when you get near them?

What is the best bug fogger for carpet beetles?

The best way to kill carpet beetles or anything living in your carpet is with hot steam! It's safe and won't harm pets or children and kills everything instantly. I had carpet beetles and didn't want to use harmful pesticides. The steam mop reaches 240 degrees and will kill everything. Since I did this, I have not seen any carpet beetles.

You must move the furniture to get under the legs, wash curtains and throw rugs and put them in the dryer. Heat will kill them all. Clean out your closets and drawers on occasion and wash everything. Just being clean and regular vacuuming will ensure keeping the bugs in your carpet at bay.

They also sell sticky traps specifically for these types of bugs too. You can place them under the furniture where pets and children can't get at them.

Hot steam is the way to go. I would never use pesticide with children and pets around.

Can moth ball flakes kill grubs?

How do you get rid of fleas on a ferret?

Ferrets do tend to scratch and itch a lot. Bathing and/or using a product not made for ferrets will dry out their skin, making them itch, also check for fleas. Bathing a ferret is not necessary unless they get into something and needs a bath. Ferrets can also have allergies that will make them itchy. If you are feeding dry ferret food, give them a tiny bit of olive oil every few days for their coat, it has a lot of good nutrients. Most ferrets like olive oil, you can use it as a treat for them. Also your ferret's ears may need cleaning which also causes them to scratch themselves

Do moth balls control ants?

I have found that "Mock Orange" works very well for deterring spiders, it is kind of like a lilac bush and the flower grow into a ball shape. You can get this ball shaped cluster of tiny flowers and put it in an old stocking or just throw it under furniture or hang in the stocking, the older the flowers become the more the spiders hate it and it has a pretty pleasant smell, unlike mothballs. Mothballs can be very toxic! If it is just you and no pets or children it could be fine, but why not use nice smelling flowers. You could also use natural oils, not sure of the combination, but something to do with lavender and/or peppermint oils

How can pesticides be good?

they kill the very things that kill our plants and makes ourlawns weed free. the bad thing is constant use of them, lead to COPD which destroys air sacks in your lungs.take it from me . give me a crappy lawn and small harvests from your backyard garden and let me breath again.

A better question is how could the use of them be bad!? Pesticides can certainly be overused, but the correct use allows people to live their lives free from disease and with full stomachs.

Without pesticides, wars could have been lost, food far less plentiful, whole areas would be uninhabitable. Disease would be rampant and our food supply much more scare and less stable. Eating could become an adventure as to what disease you could contract.

A great example is the banning of DDT. Malaria was almost completely eradicated through the use of DDT. The banning if this chemical has caused millions of deaths with the diseases resurgence.

Should you spray your crops with pesticide to kill aphids?

Even organic pesticides are potentially harmful to beneficial pollinators such as honeybees.

Some aphid infestations can be controlled by simply aiming a jet of water at the infested plant, and this should be tried first.

If the damage caused by aphids is severe enough to warrant the risk of insecticide use, these recommendations should help minimize the harm to pollinators:

  1. Apply during early morning or late evening hours, when bees are least active
  2. Avoid application while flowers are in full bloom
  3. Always follow the instructions and precautions on the insecticide label
  4. If you're spraying a large area, notify any beekeepers in the vicinity so they can temporarily confine or move their bees

Can pesticides kill fish?

Not ordinarily however it can kill polywogs & fish easily if water contaminated. For a frog it would have to be pretty extreme neglect since it would take much more (size) & they are in the water less. Water dilutes it out but creatures with gills highly suseptable. A frog would have to ingest, it would not pass easily trough the body.

How long do wasps stay in a nest?

The process is reliant upon the number of wasps actively engaged in construction and not dividing their labors between foraging and construction .The nests of some social wasps, such as hornets, are first constructed by the queen and reach about the size of a walnut before sterile female workers take over construction. The queen initially starts the nest by making a single layer or canopy and working outwards until she reaches the edges of the cavity. Beneath the canopy she constructs a stalk to which she can attach several cells; these cells are where the first eggs will be laid. The queen then continues to work outwards to the edges of the cavity after which she adds another tier.

Do citronella plants repel horseflies?

NO! It does not repel bees. I live in Southern California, crazy weather sometimes. It was cold one day and I was working out in the yard. I lit about 3 citronella candles for the gnats. Finished my gardening put the candles out, under the porch and that was that. The next day it was back in the 90's. I didn't cover the candles and the heat softened the wax. I went outside and there were so many bees in my backyard. They were all drawn to the candles. I'm allergic to bees so I am ALWAYS careful but I didn't think it would get so hot from 1 day to another.

The backyard smelled SO good though.

How long does frontline spray take to kill fleas and ticks?

Answer 3Spot-On Pesticides such as Frontline, Zodiac, Defend, Bio Spot, Advantix, Adams and Advantage trigger adverse reactions in dogs and cats, shorten life spans, cause terminal illness, and premature death.

Chemicals injected into your pets blood stream compromise with their vital organs, including the liver, kidney and thyroid. Recent research suggests that the toxic effects lead to a 25% reduction in life expectancy in those animals treated, and inevitably to a painful and premature death. Pets treated with such toxins also experience nausea, nervous disorders, sleeplessness, flaky skin, scabs and other uncomfortable effects created by a compromised immune system.

Veterinary Edit:

Spot on Pesticides ACTUALLY spread throughout the sebaceous glands on the skin so that they cover the pet fully, there is NO for the medication to get into the pets blood stream. The safest products out there to use are actually Frontline, Advantix, and Vector. Frontline even did a study on the potency of the active ingredient in their product and found that a small dog 6-12 lbs could consume the contents of ten 88-132 lbs tubes and still be perfectly fine with minor diarrhea. The problem with fleas is that they lay 20,000 eggs per day per flea, so if you see 1-2 fleas, in a few weeks you will have 20,000 - 40,000 fleas.
